NetflixRamin Bahrani is the writer and director of the 2021 Indian drama film titled The White Tiger. Rajkummar Rao, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, and Adarsh Gourav feature in the movie. Mukul Deora and Ramin Bahrani produced the movie, while Chopra Jonas, Prem Akkaraju, and Ava DuVernay served as executive producers. The plot revolves around Balram, who hails from an impoverished Indian hamlet and utilizes his wits and guile to transcend poverty, and is an adaptation of Aravind Adiga’s 2008 novel of the same name.
After publishing his novel, Adiga made the decision to turn it into a movie in late 2010, selling the producer Mukul Deora the rights. Having read preliminary versions of the book before it was released, Bahrani was thrilled to be given the director’s chair for the adaptation. The White Tiger, which was filmed all across Delhi from October to December 2019, made its world premiere on January 6, 2021 in Las Vegas and debuted on January 13 in a few US movie theaters. On January 22, 2021, Netflix, a streaming service, launched it worldwide. Critics gave The White Tiger favorable reviews, praising the cast’s performances as well as the film’s directing, writing, and photography.
Entrepreneur Balram Halwai sent a letter to Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao in 2010 requesting a meeting and sharing his life narrative. According to him, the Indian underclass is stuck in a never-ending cycle of slavery, much like hens in a chicken coop.
Due to his superior academic standing, Balram receives a scholarship offer as a young child from Laxmangarh to attend a school in Delhi. They tell him he’s a “white tiger,” one of just a few born each century. But Balram never goes back to school because his grandmother makes him work in the village tea stall when his father is unable to pay the village landlord, often known as “the Stork.” Without access to medical care, Balram’s father passes away from tuberculosis.
As a young man, Balram wants to work as an assistant to Ashok, the Stork family’s son, who has returned from a trip to the United States with his wife Pinky, who was raised in Jackson Heights. With the prospect of splitting the chauffeur’s pay, Balram gets his driving lessons sponsored by his grandmother. Balram is employed as the second driver for the Stork family, but he too receives unfair treatment and is assigned menial jobs to perform. The fear of being killed along with his entire family if Balram betrays them keeps him faithful.
Ashok and Pinky decide to go to Delhi, where Ashok will buy off Indian lawmakers to spare his family from paying taxes. Desiring to drive for them in Delhi, Balram reveals the family’s main driver’s secret: he is a Muslim. Balram joins the couple in Delhi after the principal driver is sacked (because of the family’s stereotypical anti-Muslim sentiment). Though they still see Balram as a servant, Ashok and Pinky treat him with more respect than other family members do, and they eventually grow to care for him.
On Pinky’s birthday in Delhi, she and Ashok convince Balram to let Pinky drive after she gets intoxicated, which causes her to hit and kill a child by accident. Balram is forced to sign a confession that his grandma has approved of by the Stork family. Even if it doesn’t work out in the end, Balram is disturbed and realizes for the first time how disposable he is to his bosses.
Balram stays with Ashok to provide emotional support while Pinky departs to return to New York. Balram understands that once his services to Ashok were no longer required, he would not be guaranteed a comfortable life. Balram starts to use fictitious invoices to deceive Ashok while earning extra cash by selling the car’s gasoline and operating it as an unregistered taxi.
