Cinematographer Paolo Carnera is an Italian who was born on April 2, 1957. Carnera, who was born in Venice, studied under Carlo Di Palma at the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia in Rome from 1980 to 1982. He worked on a number of low-budget first and second works during the eighties and the nineties, including the Centro Sperimentale debuts of several old classmates, most notably Francesca Archibugi, for whom he handled the photography for a number of shorts and subsequently her second and third feature features.Additionally, he collaborated on Paolo Virzì’s first two films.
Carnera was nominated in 2012 for best cinematography alongside David di Donatello and Nastro d’Argento for the crime-drama film ACAB – All Cops Are Bastards. Carnera took home the Nastro d’Argento for Best Cinematography with 2020’s Bad Tales. Director of Photography Carnera described his search for the pastel pink, blue, and green colors that are “colours you can find anywhere in India, especially on neon-lit shops” for Ramin Bahrani’s 2021 adaption of The White Tiger.
