Indian filmmaker, screenwriter, and cinematographer Kabir Khan primarily works in Hindi films. After working on documentaries for a while, he directed his first feature picture, Kabul Express, an adventure thriller, in 2006. His most well-known directing credits are from Bajrangi Bhaijaan (2015), Ek Tha Tiger (2012), and New York (2009). In 2021, his most recent movie, 83, was released.
He serves on the Mumbai Academy of the Moving Image board of directors. Khan was born to Leela Narayan Rao, a Hindu Telugu-speaking mother, and Rasheeduddin Khan, a Muslim who spoke Urdu. As a Pathan from Kaimganj in the Farrukhabad district of Uttar Pradesh, Rasheeduddin was a nephew of Dr. Zakir Hussain, the President of India from 1967 to 1969.
He was also a communist politician who was supported by Indira Gandhi when he was nominated to the Rajya Sabha in the early 1970s, despite being a relatively young man. His sister Anusheh is wed to director Vijay Krishna Acharya, who has helmed movies including Dhoom 3 and Tashan.
Khan attended Delhi University’s Kirori Mal College and Jamia Millia Islamia in Delhi. He is wed to Mini Mathur, an actress and television host, and the two of them have two children, Vivaan and Sairah.
He first collaborated with well-known journalist Saeed Naqvi. He traveled the world reporting on global issues while working as a cameraman and director for Saeed Naqvi before going full-time into filmmaking. Along with Saeed Naqvi, he visited over sixty different countries to conduct documentaries and interviews. Working as a cameraman gave him the chance to meet world leaders like Fidel Castro and Nelson Mandela.
