TheatrePushkar–Gayathri wrote and directed the 2017 Tamil-language neo-noir action thriller Vikram Vedha, which was also produced by YNOT Studios. Based on the Indian folktale Baital Pachisi, the film features R. Madhavan and Vijay Sethupathi as the titular characters. Other actors who appear in the film include Shraddha Srinath, Kathir, Varalaxmi Sarathkumar, Prem, Achyuth Kumar, Hareesh Peradi, and Vivek Prasanna. Inspector Vikram is tasked in the movie with finding and murdering mobster Vedha. Vikram’s understanding of good and evil is altered by the three stories Vedha tells him after he willingly gives himself up.
The news that Sashikanth would be producing a Pushkar–Gayathri film was announced in January 2015. Following a year of development on the script throughout 2015, Madhavan and Sethupathi were selected to play the lead roles in February 2016. Principal photography began in November of the same year and was completed by January 2017. The film was shot mainly in North Chennai, with the area being used as its backdrop. Sam C. S. composed the soundtrack and score, while P. S. Vinod and A. Richard Kevin handled the cinematography and editing respectively.
Vikram has a clear-cut moral compass and is an honest police officer. Fearsome gangster Vedha is aware of the subtleties in between. An encounter unit led by Vikram’s closest friend Simon was established to get rid of Vedha. In order to evade more investigation, the team frames an unarmed criminal slain by Vikram in one incident, killing some of Vedha’s goons. Vedha goes into the police station and willingly surrenders as the unit prepares for another showdown. Vedha offers to tell him a story when Vikram questions him. The first act tells the story of Vedha turning into a drug smuggler and cautioning his younger brother Vignesh, known as “Pulli” (skilled) because of his extraordinary mathematics abilities, to abstain from crime.
Ravi attacks Pulli under the behest of his boss Sangu, leaving his hand permanently scarred. Vedha asks Vikram if he ought to murder Sangu or Ravi. Vedha completely concurs with Vikram’s response that Sangu was the true offender and that Ravi was merely a weapon, implying that he killed Sangu. Vedha’s attorney, who happens to be Vikram’s wife, Priya, steps in and saves him. Based on the mark on his palm, Vikram discovers that the unarmed criminal they had set up to evade investigation was, in fact, Pulli. Vikram runs to save Simon because of fear that Vedha could try to kill him, but he and Chandra are shot dead. SP Surendhar writes it off as a misunderstanding.
In the second story, Pulli, who is now an adult, offers to invest Vedha’s income in shares in order to launder it. Cheta, Vedha’s boss, contributes ₹5 crore to this project, which is equal to ₹7.0 crore or US$810,000 in 2023. But the money goes missing, and Chandra is allegedly abducted. Returning because she loves Pulli, Chandra confesses that she stole the money to start again. Vedha gives the money back to Cheta, who gives him the order to murder Chandra. Vedha incites a gang war by asking Vikram if he should obey Cheta and follow his orders or defy him and back Pulli and Chandra. Vedha agreed with Vikram’s response that he ought to back Pulli. When Vikram momentarily falters upon realizing Pulli’s innocence, Vedha strikes.
After following Simon’s informant Kaattai to Pulli’s hiding place, Vikram starts his inquiry but discovers that Kaattai has been murdered. As Vikram and his team search for the murderer, he pauses to think back and discovers one of the Kerala Quotation Gang members from Vedha’s account. Vikram captures and battles the gang member, who nearly kills him before being shot and killed by Santhanam, a member of his squad. When Vikram looks around his room, he discovers a cigar and discovers that it contains marijuana rather than tobacco. After determining that Ravi is responsible for the encounter, Vikram tells Vedha at his restaurant, who takes Ravi to a shuttered factory.
Vedha claims that Ravi bribed Simon to kill his guys in response to his confession. Vikram is asked by Vedha if Simon was correct because he turned corrupt in order to finance his son’s medical treatment. Vikram becomes irate upon learning who killed Simon after Vedha murders Ravi. When Surendhar and the unit get there, he chastises Vikram for allowing Vedha to get away once more. Vikram gradually comes to the realization that Ravi had bribed the entire unit as well. According to Surendhar, Chandra’s kidnapping was planned to get Pulli out of Mumbai so that Vedha would come out of hiding after Ravi paid them to kill Vedha. But the unit had slain both Simon and Chandra, who had gone to save her out of remorse. Vedha reappears as the group gets ready to murder Vikram.
