Plot
The lucrative Dhanlakshmi Sweets, named for its grandmother Dhanlakshmi Randhawa, is owned by the wealthy Punjabi business family the Randhawas. Kanwal Lund, her husband, suffered an accident shortly after they were married that left him amnesic and wheelchair-bound. Their son Tijori, who resembles Dhanlakshmi in many ways, and their two adult grandchildren, Rocky and Gayatri, are in charge of their home along with Tijori’s submissive wife Punam. Kanwal misidentifies a woman as Jamini during a Tijori prize ceremony. Rocky discovers a picture of Jamini and begins his search for her since he is eager to assist his grandfather.
The renowned television news caster Rani Chatterjee’s grandma is Jamini. Rani originates from an educated Bengali household, where her father Chandon is a trained Kathak dancer and her mother Anjali is an English professor. Jamini and Kanwal are to be reunited at the Randhawa residence, Rocky and Rani decide. Kanwal recognises Jamini after a moment of confusion, kisses her in front of his family, and then realises who she is. They had a brief extramarital relationship in 1978, it is discovered. The meetings that Rocky and Rani arrange between their grandparents serve as the beginning of their own relationship.
Rani describes her relationship with Rocky to Jamini as a brief fling. When Rani rejects Rocky’s marriage proposal, the two of them break up. Rani discovers her love for Rocky while on a business trip to Kashmir, and she returns to say as much. They decide to exchange residences for three months in order to disrupt the patriarchal cycle that is so pervasive in Indian society because of the cultural disparities between the two households.
To the chagrin of Dhanlakshmi and Tijori, Rani makes an effort to empower the women in Rocky’s family by sending Punam’s singing video to a competition and assisting his overweight and insecure sister Gayatri in finding employment. The Chatterjees make fun of Rocky for his ignorance of common knowledge. Rocky’s friend is getting married, and Dhanlakshmi proposes Chandon perform a dance number. Chandon’s sissy Kathak dancing makes the audience laugh at him. Rocky expresses regret and gains the Chatterjees’ respect by being willing to renounce his patriarchal behaviour. He begins going to Chandon’s dance lessons as well.
Rocky and Chandon dance together to “Dola Re Dola” during the Durga Puja celebrations, which enrages Tijori. Rocky becomes upset when Rani pushes Tijori during the ensuing altercation because he views it as disrespectful. They make the decision to break up. When Punam tries to establish herself during an altercation back at the Randhawa home, Tijori tries to strike her. Rocky observes this, rebels against his father for the first time, and makes the decision to leave the house with his sister and mother. When Kanwal sees the fight, he knows his son but passes away soon after. Jamini arrives to pay her respects, and despite Dhanlakshmi’s objections, Tijori permits her to do so.
A few months later, Tijori, now a different man, apologises to the Chatterjee family and suggests Rocky and Rani be married. When they do get married, Dhanlakshmi appears to embrace Rani as a member of the family by sending her the recipe for their sweets even though she does not actually show up.
