TheatreRang De Basanti, an Indian Hindi-language epic drama film, was written, produced, and directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra. The movie boasts an ensemble cast featuring Aamir Khan, Siddharth (in his Hindi debut), Atul Kulkarni, Sharman Joshi, Kunal Kapoor, British actress Alice Patten (also making her Hindi debut), R. Madhavan, and Soha Ali Khan. Sony BMG released the film’s soundtrack, with music composed by A. R. Rahman and lyrics penned by Prasoon Joshi and Blaaze, an India-based rapper.
The narrative centers on a British film student’s journey to India to document the stories of five Indian freedom fighters. She forms bonds with and casts five young men in her film, inspiring them to challenge the injustices of their contemporary government.
Primarily shot in New Delhi, Rang De Basanti had a global release on January 26, 2006. It shattered opening box office records in India, emerging as the country’s highest-grossing film in its opening weekend and boasting the highest opening-day collections for a Hindi film.
The film garnered widespread critical acclaim, winning the National Film Award for Best Popular Film and receiving a nomination for Best Foreign Language Film at the 2007 BAFTA Awards. It was selected as India’s official entry for the Golden Globe Awards and the Academy Awards in the Best Foreign Language Film category, although it ultimately did not receive nominations for either award. A. R. Rahman’s soundtrack, highly praised, included two tracks under consideration for an Academy Award nomination.
