Om Puri, OBE, was an Indian actor who worked in independent and art films, Malayalam, Bengali, Kannada, English, Punjabi, Gujarati, Telugu, and Marathi films, as well as several international motion pictures. He was born on October 18, 1950, and passed away on January 6, 2017. He is considered by many to be among the best actors in international film. In 1990, he was honored with two Filmfare Awards, two National Film Awards for Best Actor, and India’s fourth-highest civilian honor, the Padma Shri. He received an honorary officer status in the Order of the British Empire in 2004. His author-backed parts in television series like Tamas (1987), Sadgati (1981), and Aakrosh (1980), Arohan (1982), and Ardh Satya (1983) are what made him most famous.
Notable parts in a number of popular commercial films over his career, including Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro (1983) and Chachi 420 (1997). He has worked on several projects with Govind Nihalani and filmmaker Shyam Benegal. Puri has made appearances in non-Indian productions in Pakistan, the United States, and the United Kingdom. His roles in the 1990s included the comic drama East Is East (1999) and My Son the Fanatic (1997), for which he was nominated for a BAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role.
In Ambala, Puri was born into a Hindu family from Punjab. Tek Chand Puri, his father, was employed by the Indian Army and on the railroads. Puri’s family didn’t know when he was born because his parents didn’t have any documentation like a birth certificate.
