Monkey Man debuted at South by Southwest on March 11, 2024, and Universal Pictures released it in theaters across the US and Canada on April 5, 2024. Despite having a $10 million budget, the critically acclaimed movie made $35 million globally. It received a nomination for Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director, or Producer at the 78th BAFTA Awards.
Plot
Kid, who lives with his mother Neela in an Indian jungle community, finds inspiration in her stories of Hanuman. A corrupt police officer named Rana Singh is sent by Baba Shakti, a spiritual guru in the adjacent city of Yatana, to evict the peasants, who belong to a persecuted religious minority, and take their land. Neela protects Kid from Rana, who kills her by setting her body on fire, while the town is butchered. Kid’s hands are scorched and disfigured as a result of his fruitless attempts to save Neela.
Years later, an older child in a monkey mask works as a heel and jobber at Tiger’s Temple, an underground fight club. Rana frequents Kings, a posh brothel and cocaine den that poses as a social club, and Kid is eager to get even with her. Through a complex deception, Kid sneaks inside Kings, meets Queenie Kapoor, the manager, and convinces her to hire him as a lowly kitchen worker. Kid makes friends with Sita, one of the mistreated sex workers, and Alphonso, a mobster employed by Queenie. In exchange for a promotion to waiter, Kid stages a fight at Tiger’s Temple to benefit Alphonso financially. Kid intends to utilize his new position to get closer to Rana in order to get revenge.
To get by security at Kings’ entrance, a kid purchases a handgun and teaches a stray dog to carry it to a back door. To get Rana to go to the bathroom so he can be shot in private, the kid gives him cocaine laced with powdered bleach. Kid has to battle his way out of the building after the assassination attempt fails. The cops pursue him as he escapes in Alphonso’s supercharged auto rickshaw. The young person is arrested after crashing the rickshaw. The child escapes from police custody, but while doing so, a police sniper shoots him. Alpha, the guardian of a nearby temple dedicated to Ardhanarishvara, saves him when he falls into a canal. Baba’s nationalist and ultraconservative movement is targeting Yatana’s hijra community, which uses the shrine as a haven.
After discovering that he is now a wanted fugitive, the child recovers at the temple. He tackles the trauma of his mother’s death while Alpha leads him through a psychedelic trip. With a renewed sense of purpose, Kid prepares to fight for the underprivileged and himself. Kid wagers on himself and engages in combat once more at Tiger’s Temple when the hijra’s shelter is in danger. He wins with enough cash to save Alpha’s temple after deliberately defeating two faces.
Baba’s candidate is elected on Diwali, and their nationalist party celebrates at Kings. Alpha and her warriors join Kid as he uses homemade weaponry to battle his way inside after bleaching his monkey mask white. When Queenie tries to shoot Kid, Sita kills her. In a vicious fistfight, Kid kills Rana. Baba stabs him with knives concealed in his padukas when he enters the apartment using Queenie’s amputated thumb. The identical knives are used by the child to kill Baba. Kid collapses from his wounds after finally exacting revenge for the loss of his mother, thinking back to Neela and his love for Hanuman.
