Dev Patel, born on April 23, 1990, is a British actor and filmmaker who has garnered numerous awards and nominations throughout his career, including a British Academy Film Award and recognition on Time magazine’s list of the 100 most influential people in the world in 2024.
Patel’s acting journey commenced with his portrayal of Anwar Kharral in the E4 teen drama series Skins (2007). However, it was his breakout role in Danny Boyle’s acclaimed drama Slumdog Millionaire (2008) that propelled him to international prominence, earning him a nomination for the BAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role. Following this success, Patel’s career flourished with leading roles in comedy-dramas like The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (2011) and its sequel The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (2015), as well as the science fiction thriller Chappie (2015). Additionally, he impressed audiences with his supporting role in the HBO series The Newsroom (2012–2014).
His portrayal of Saroo Brierley in the drama Lion (2016) garnered critical acclaim, earning him the BAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role and an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
