Josh Elliott is an American television journalist who most recently worked with CBS News. Earlier in his career, he served as a news anchor for ABC’s Good Morning America, a sports anchor for NBC Sports and Today, and co-anchored ESPN’s morning edition of SportsCenter.
Elliott was born to Susan, who gave him up for adoption, and was raised in Los Angeles, California, by his adoptive parents, Charles Elliott and Toni Jordan. At age 13, his father came out as gay amid his parents’ divorce, and Elliott lost his father when he was 15.
After graduating from Loyola High School of Los Angeles, Elliott attended the University of California, Santa Barbara, originally hoping to join the men’s water polo team. Instead, he became involved with the campus newspaper, The Daily Nexus, and earned a B.A. in English literature in 1993. He then worked as a stringer for the Santa Barbara News-Press before pursuing a Master of Science in Journalism from Columbia University, which he completed in 1999. Early in his career, he produced television content for Galaxy Productions and 20th Century Fox, eventually covering major sporting events for Sports Illustrated over six years.
Elliott joined ESPN in 2004, contributing to Around the Horn, Jim Rome Is Burning, and guest co-hosting Cold Pizza on ESPN2. He hosted the short-lived Classic Now on ESPN Classic from 2005 to 2006 and also co-anchored on ESPNEWS while reporting for SportsCenter. Following the cancellation of Classic Now, he contributed to ESPN the Magazine and ESPN.com. When ESPN launched live weekday morning broadcasts of SportsCenter on August 11, 2008, Elliott co-anchored with Hannah Storm for the first three hours starting at 9 a.m. ET.
In May 2011, Elliott joined ABC’s Good Morning America after Juju Chang’s departure and also substituted on the weekend edition of ABC World News. He co-anchored Good Afternoon America, a temporary spin-off from July to September 2012, filling in for the canceled talk show The Revolution.
On March 30, 2014, ABC News President Ben Sherwood announced that Elliott had signed with NBC, leaving ABC and Good Morning America. Amy Robach replaced him. At NBC, Elliott earned $4 million annually but was restricted by a six-month non-compete clause, limiting him mostly to NBC Sports coverage, including his debut at the 2014 Kentucky Derby. Though initially considered as a potential future host of Today, Elliott instead worked as a sports correspondent. He departed NBC in December 2015.
CBS News hired Elliott on March 1, 2016, as lead anchor for its digital news service CBSN. CBS News president David Rhodes highlighted Elliott’s versatility and the opportunities available at CBSN. On February 10, 2017, Elliott announced on-air his departure from CBSN, suggesting a possible return, but CBS executives were reportedly surprised, and he was officially fired on February 13, 2017.
Elliott earned a local Emmy in New York City in 2005 for his contributions to Angles on MSG Network and co-hosted Super Bowl XL coverage for Westwood One Sports. In 2018, he co-hosted Yellowstone Live on the National Geographic Channel with wildlife expert Chris Packham, covering the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem with live feeds from multiple cameras.
On July 11, 2015, Elliott married fellow news anchor Liz Cho.
