K. P. A. C. Lalitha, born Maheshwari Amma on March 10, 1947, in Aranmula, Pathanamthitta District, Kerala, was a revered Indian film and stage actress known for her prolific contributions to the Malayalam film industry. She left an indelible mark on the cinematic landscape with a career spanning five decades and over 550 films. Lalitha was not just an accomplished actress but also a writer, activist, and producer.
Born into a Kerala Christian family to Kadaykatharayil Veettil Ananthan Nair and Bhargavi Amma, Lalitha was the eldest among five children. Her father, a photographer from Kayamkulam, and her mother, a housewife from Aranmula, laid the foundation for her upbringing. Growing up in Ramapuram near Kayamkulam, Lalitha migrated with her family to Changanassery, Kottayam, where she developed a keen interest in dance, attending dance classes in her youth.
Lalitha’s journey into the world of performing arts began early. She expressed her passion for dance from a young age, learning under the guidance of Chellappan Pillai and Kalamandalam Gangadharan. Her initial foray into acting occurred at the age of 10 in the play “Geethayude Bali.” She later joined the renowned leftist drama troupe, Kerala People’s Arts Club (K. P. A. C.), where she adopted the stage name Lalitha.
Lalitha made her film debut in the adaptation of “Koottukudumbam” directed by K. S. Sethumadhavan. In 1978, she married Bharathan, a noted Malayalam film director, marking a significant personal and professional milestone. Lalitha’s career flourished under her husband’s direction, with iconic roles in films like “Amaram” (1991), for which she won the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actress.
