Anand is a renowned Indian actor recognized for his contributions mainly in Tamil, Malayalam, and Telugu cinema, with a few appearances in Kannada productions. He has also made notable appearances in Malayalam television serials.
Anand’s most prominent film to date is Mani Ratnam’s black comedy movie, “Thiruda Thiruda.” However, unlike some of his co-stars from the film, he did not achieve a significant breakthrough from it. Throughout his career, he has often taken on second lead and supporting roles in various films, including noteworthy appearances in Kamal Haasan’s “Sathya” and Vijayakanth’s “Poonthotta Kaavalkaaran.”
His journey in the film industry began in 1987 with his debut in “Vanna Kanavugal.” Anand is best known for his roles in films such as “Sathya” (1988), “Anbe En Anbe” (1988), “Apoorva Sagodharargal” (1989), “Oor Mariyadhai” (1992), “Thalaivasal” (1992), “Thiruda Thiruda” (1993), which was screened at the Toronto International Film Festival, and “Enakku 20 Unakku 18” (2003).
Apart from acting, Anand has also tried his hand at production and direction, notably with the Malayalam short film titled “Kassu Panam Thuttu Money Money.” In recent years, he has transitioned into character roles and found success in movies such as “1: Nenokkadine” (2014), “Ring Master” (2014), “Ivan Maryadaraman” (2015), “Srimanthudu” (2015), and “Gentleman” (2016).
Anand was born in Hyderabad as the youngest of four sons to his father V. S. Bharathi, who worked for Brooke Bond India Ltd, and his mother Rajalakshmi, a homemaker. His brothers include B. Ramesh, who serves as a Vice President of Finance at Times of India, Dr. B. Suresh, a teacher at English Vivekananda College, and Bharat Arun, a former Indian cricketer who now holds the position of bowling coach for the Indian cricket team. Anand also owns a restaurant named Zenzerro in Thiruvananthapuram.
Anand has been married to actress Poornima since 2009.
In the year 2000, Anand faced legal trouble when he was involved in a drunk driving hit-and-run case, during which he collided with a police officer attempting to stop him. Unfortunately, the police officer, Ramachandran, succumbed to his injuries, leading to a murder charge against the actor. Anand eventually reached a financial settlement with the victim’s family and was later acquitted, found innocent of the charges.
In 2008, Anand’s house in Uthandi, Chennai, was burgled, and he claimed that it was an “inside job.”
