Paatal Lok is an Indian Hindi-language crime thriller television series streaming on Amazon Prime Video. Created by Sudip Sharma, the show was written by Sharma along with Sagar Haveli, Hardik Mehta, and Gunjit Chopra and directed by Avinash Arun and Prosit Roy. Produced under the banner of Clean Slate Filmz, the series features Jaideep Ahlawat, Gul Panag, Neeraj Kabi, Swastika Mukherjee, Ishwak Singh, Abhishek Banerjee, Niharika Lyra Dutt, and Richa Chaturvedi in key roles. Loosely inspired by Tarun Tejpal’s 2010 novel The Story of My Assassins, the first season revolves around a disillusioned cop investigating an assassination attempt that takes unexpected turns.
The second season continues the story, set amidst political turmoil in Nagaland, with Ahlawat, Singh, and Panag reprising their roles. They are joined by new cast members including Tillotama Shome, Jahnu Barua, Nagesh Kukunoor, and Prashant Tamang.
The script was written in January 2017, followed by over a year of writing and pre-production. The series was shot across more than 110 real locations, making it the first series to be filmed in Chitrakoot. Cinematography was handled by Avinash Arun and Saurabh Goswami, with Sanyukta Kaza managing the editing. The background score was composed by Naren Chandravarkar and Benedict Taylor.
Paatal Lok premiered on Amazon Prime Video on May 15, 2020, and received widespread acclaim for its gripping storyline, strong performances, and compelling direction. The show was listed among the Top 10 Indian Web Series of 2020 by The Indian Express and was also recognized by Variety as one of the best international TV shows of the year.
Season 2 Plot
Episode -1:
The story begins with the shocking discovery of a decapitated body at Nagaland Sadan by the room service staff.
Meanwhile, Hathi Ram remains an Inspector at Outer Jamuna Paar police station, struggling with financial difficulties. His wife is increasingly frustrated with their situation, and her brother suggests he take a private job where the employer seeks ex-military or former police personnel. However, Hathi Ram realizes that the job is merely security for a hawala business and refuses the offer.
The murder victim, Jonathan Thom, was a prominent Naga leader in Delhi for the crucial Nagaland Business Summit. The investigation is led by Hathi Ram’s former junior, Ansari, who has since been promoted to ACP as an IPS officer. As he reviews CCTV footage, he spots Roze Lizo, a club hostess, hurriedly leaving Nagaland Sadan around the time of the murder. Ansari issues a lookout notice for Roze and questions Dhruv Mallik, the owner of the club. Meanwhile, Kapil Reddy, a key figure in the business summit, works to pacify Uncle Ken and the rest of the Nagaland delegation.
At the police station, Hathi Ram meets a distressed woman accompanied by her young son. She reports that her husband, Raghu Paswan, has gone missing. Upon investigating, Hathi Ram traces Raghu’s last known employer, Jogi, a fruit wholesaler, who reveals that Raghu frequently traveled to Nagaland to transport fruit back to Delhi.
As Hathi Ram continues his search, tragedy strikes when Paswan’s wife is injured in an accident and later succumbs to her injuries. At the hospital, Hathi Ram notices two men behaving suspiciously and sees that Paswan’s son is visibly terrified of them. He gives chase, but the men manage to escape.
Determined to find answers, Hathi Ram examines CCTV footage from the train station. To his surprise, he spots Raghu Paswan boarding a train to Nagaland alongside Roze Lizo.
Episode -2:
DCP Bhardwaj reviews the CCTV footage of Raghu Paswan and Roze Lizo with Ansari but refuses to include Hathi Ram in the investigation team. Determined to uncover the truth, Hathi Ram revisits Jogi, only to find his business shut down. Breaking into Jogi’s office, he discovers multiple invoices from a travel agency. The travel agent informs him that a group of travelers is set to return from Nagaland on the afternoon train.
Tracking the travelers to a warehouse, Hathi Ram uncovers Jogi’s involvement in a narcotics smuggling operation. Acting on this lead, Ansari dispatches ACP Virk and the narcotics team for a raid. During the operation, Hathi Ram is knocked unconscious, and by the time he regains consciousness, Virk has taken all the credit for the bust. However, this turn of events allows Ansari to negotiate Hathi Ram’s inclusion in the murder investigation team.
During Jogi’s interrogation, Hathi Ram learns that Paswan’s wife was killed accidentally by Jogi’s men, who were attempting to intimidate her. Meanwhile, Dhruv Mallik, the club owner where Roze Lizo worked and a key figure connected to Jogi’s drug operations, arrives at the station with an anticipatory bail order, complicating the police efforts.
Amidst rising tensions, a video surfaces online featuring three masked individuals claiming responsibility for Jonathan Thom’s murder, sparking a media frenzy. In Nagaland, a constable catches sight of Roze Lizo, providing a crucial lead.
Meanwhile, Hathi Ram, moved by Paswan’s son’s plight, takes the motherless child home, much to his wife’s dismay. With the case growing more complex, Hathi Ram and Ansari prepare to leave for Nagaland to continue their investigation.
Episode – 3:
Hathi Ram and Ansari arrive in Nagaland and are introduced to SP Meghna Barua, who remains skeptical about their involvement in the case. Despite her reservations, they proceed to Jonathan Thom’s funeral, where their presence stirs tension among the attendees. The situation escalates further with the unexpected arrival of Thom’s estranged son, Reuben, whose reappearance adds another layer of intrigue to the investigation.
As they dig deeper, Hathi Ram and Ansari uncover Thom’s involvement in various illicit businesses, hinting at a larger conspiracy behind his murder. Just as they identify a drug dealer who could provide crucial information, he is found dead under mysterious circumstances. Soon after, the three masked individuals who had publicly claimed responsibility for Thom’s murder also turn up dead, further complicating the case and suggesting a deeper, more dangerous cover-up at play.
Episode -4:
Hathiram and Ansari are faced with the chilling realization that the three individuals who were supposedly responsible for Thom’s murder were actually set up. As the investigation intensifies, Hathiram receives a surprising call from Ansari’s purported significant other. However, to his shock, it’s a male voice on the other end, and Hathiram expresses his acceptance of Ansari’s situation, hinting at a deeper, unspoken understanding.
Meanwhile, Hathiram uncovers a connection between Raghu Paswan and Reddy’s hotel, which leads him to travel to Delhi for a brief respite with his family. However, upon arriving, Hathiram’s plans are thwarted when his son, much to his dismay, refuses to spend the day with the family and instead chooses to be with his college friends.
While Hathiram is in Delhi, Ansari receives an anonymous tip-off about Rose Lizo’s whereabouts and begins searching for her. In an unexpected twist, Reuben and Thom’s security officer, Daniel, also embark on their own quest to find Rose. Ansari eventually locates Rose, but before he can gain any useful information, she’s attacked by three men. As Ansari attempts to protect her, Rose flees on foot, with Ansari chasing after her. The tense pursuit sees Ansari and Rose narrowly escaping the attackers, but as they drive off in Ansari’s car, they are ambushed and shot. Tragically, Ansari succumbs to his injuries, marking a pivotal and tragic moment in the investigation.
Episode-5:
As the investigation intensifies, the police launch a search operation for Rose Lizo in the jungles where she was last seen, with Daniel also out there on his own mission to find her. Meanwhile, Hathi Ram is grappling with a personal tragedy in Delhi, which weighs heavily on him as he tries to balance his professional and personal life. The inquiry into the events that went wrong in Kohima adds another layer of stress, as Hathi Ram reflects on the investigation’s twists and turns.
Haunted by the fact that Ansari is being unfairly blamed and made the scapegoat for the events that led to his death, Hathi Ram becomes increasingly frustrated with the system’s inability to seek justice. Unable to tolerate the situation any longer, Hathi Ram takes matters into his own hands, ready to confront the forces at play and ensure that Ansari’s sacrifice and truth are not buried. His decision to take action on his own marks a pivotal turning point in the story, as he delves deeper into the darkness of the case, determined to uncover the truth no matter the cost.
Episode-6:
As Hathi Ram and Meghna join forces to protect Rose Lizo, they face a dangerous mob of Thom’s supporters who launch an aggressive attack on the hospital where Rose is being treated. Despite their limited resources, they hold their ground, trying to prevent the situation from spiraling further out of control. The stakes are high as they work together to protect not just Rose, but also the fragile peace in the community.
In the midst of the chaos, Hathi Ram takes it upon himself to investigate the murder of a businessman, which leads him to a startling discovery. He uncovers that Reuben, Thom’s estranged son, has been framed as the fall guy for the crime. As the investigation deepens, Hathi Ram begins to unravel the complex web of lies and deceit surrounding Thom’s death, with Reuben caught in the crossfire.
However, Hathi Ram’s personal troubles take a toll as he sustains an injury while working through the investigation. This leads him to an unexpected and life-changing revelation—he discovers that Rose Lizo has a child. This new piece of information not only changes the direction of the investigation but also raises even more questions about Rose’s past, her relationship with Thom, and the hidden motives at play. Episode-7:
Hathi Ram’s journey takes a dark turn when he is abducted and taken to meet Reuben. The confrontation is tense, but Meghna, ever determined, manages to track down Hathi Ram, staying just one step behind. As Hathi Ram finally comes face to face with Reuben, he uncovers a crucial lead that ties Reddy, a powerful figure in the community, directly to Thom’s illegal drug business. This revelation shifts the focus of the investigation, exposing the far-reaching network of corruption and crime at play.
Meanwhile, ACP Virk, now reluctantly cooperating with Hathi Ram, helps him discover Daniel’s connection to Langchoma, a key figure involved in the underworld dealings. This discovery leads Hathi Ram to a shocking realization—Uncle Ken, a trusted figure, is also deeply entwined in the web of criminal activity. The truth about Uncle Ken’s involvement promises to blow the lid off the entire operation.
But just as Hathi Ram is about to share this explosive information with Meghna, a devastating tragedy strikes. The battle is intense, and the weight of everything Hathi Ram has endured—his personal losses, the investigation’s spiraling complexities, and the lives disrupted by the conspiracy—comes to a head.
Meanwhile, in Delhi, the business summit proves to be a success, bringing unexpected consequences. As political and business leaders celebrate, Hathi Ram is left to reconsider his choices, torn between his duty as a police officer and the realization that the system may never truly change. The summit, while a victory for many, forces him to confront his own sense of justice and what he’s willing to sacrifice for it.
As the dust settles, Hathi Ram returns to Delhi with a renewed sense of determination. His search for Raghu Paswan intensifies, and after much persistence, he finally uncovers the whereabouts of Paswan, the man who has been a crucial piece in this tangled web.
