Sudip Sharma

Biography:

Sudip Sharma is an Indian screenwriter known for his work in both films and web series, including Kohrra (2023), Paatal Lok (2020), Sonchiriya (2019), Udta Punjab (2016), and NH10 (2015).

Born in Guwahati, Sharma completed his early education there before moving to Delhi for further studies. In 2002, he earned an MBA from IIM Ahmedabad and relocated to Mumbai, where he initially worked in the FMCG sector. However, his passion for storytelling led him to screenwriting in 2006, after writing a short film. Over the next six years, he honed his craft, collaborating with other writers and working on films like Superstar and Semshook, the latter of which was recognized at international film festivals.

Sharma made his screenwriting debut with NH10, a thriller inspired by real-life honor killing cases. Directed by Navdeep Singh and starring Anushka Sharma, the film was co-produced by Clean Slate Films, Phantom Films, and Eros International. He later wrote the dialogues for Laal Kaptaan, a historical action-adventure film directed by Singh.

He has frequently collaborated with director Abhishek Chaubey, writing the screenplay and dialogues for Udta Punjab, which explored the drug crisis in Punjab and was both a critical and commercial success. He continued his work with Chaubey on Sonchiriya, a dacoit Western set in the Chambal valley, which received multiple Filmfare nominations and won the Critics Award for Best Film. Sharma has also been a creative producer for projects under Anushka Sharma’s production house, Clean Slate Films, including Phillauri and Pari.

In the digital space, Sharma is best known as the creator, showrunner, and co-writer of the Amazon Prime Video series Paatal Lok. A gripping crime thriller about a disillusioned cop investigating a failed assassination attempt, the series was praised for its writing, direction, and performances. It was listed among the Top 10 Indian Web Series of 2020 by The Indian Express and as one of the best international TV shows of 2020 by Variety. Paatal Lok received eight nominations at the Filmfare OTT Awards and won five, including Best Series and Best Screenplay.

Sharma continues to be an influential voice in Indian cinema and digital storytelling. He was the creative producer for the Netflix series Mai (2022) and is currently working on the second season of Paatal Lok.
