Benedict Taylor

Biography:

Benedict Taylor is a British avant-garde violist, violinist, and composer known for his work in contemporary composition, modern string performance, and improvised music. He is actively involved in the British and European new music scene, focusing on new compositions for live performances, film, theatre, contemporary dance, art installations, and electroacoustic music. His performances primarily center around improvisation and 20th/21st-century music.

A key aspect of Taylor’s work is solo performance as a means of creative and investigative exploration. In 2013, he launched an ongoing commission series and solo label, Subverten (For Viola Solo), premiering his first works in the autumn of that year. The series continues with multiple performances annually.

Throughout his career, he has collaborated with numerous music organizations and ensembles, including clapTON Ensemble, re:sound, London Improvisers Orchestra, Berlin Improvisers Orchestra, Project Instrumental, Tokyo Improvisers Orchestra, Kammer Klang Players, Squib-Box, ARCO, London Sinfonietta Collective, and Regular Music II.

Taylor has performed at several prestigious festivals, venues, and radio programs, including Jazz en Nord Festival in France, Tete a Tete Opera Festival, Aldeburgh Festival, Cantiere Internazionale d’Arte in Montepulciano, Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, Fête de la Musique in Berlin, Manchester International Festival, Manchester Jazz Festival, Cheltenham Festival, BBC Radio 3, Resonance FM, and Radio Libertaire/Epsilonia in Paris.

In addition to his musical career, Benedict Taylor is also known for his personal life. He married Indian actress Radhika Apte in 2012.
