The Rip

Story:

Joe Carnahan, who co-wrote the story with Michael McGrale, is the director and writer of the 2026 American action thriller The Rip. In the movie, Matt Damon and Ben Affleck play members of the Miami-Dade Police Department’s drugs squad. Steven Yeun, Teyana Taylor, Sasha Calle, Catalina Sandino Moreno, Scott Adkins, and Kyle Chandler are also featured.

Inspired by the real-life narrative of Miami-Dade County Police Captain Chris Casiano, the film narrates the tale of a group of police officers who, after a raid on a covert cash operation, find their trust shattered when team members suspect one another of attempting to steal a significant amount of money.

On January 16, 2026, Netflix released it to largely positive reviews from critics. A unique agreement between Netflix and the production company, Artists Equity, offers bonuses to the employees who worked on the movie if it does well on the streaming service.

Plot

The Miami-Dade Police Department’s Tactical Narcotics Team (TNT), Captain Jackie Velez’s specialty team, is suspected of plundering drug homes after her murder. After receiving a tip regarding a Hialeah address, her second-in-command, Lieutenant Dane Dumars, directs his colleagues detectives, J.D. Byrne, Mike Ro, Numa Baptiste, and Lolo Salazar, to search the home for illegal funds. Dumars gives a different amount to each team member when asked how much money they have.

The crew is hesitantly let inside by the late homeowner’s granddaughter, Desi Molina. In the attic, they find $20 million in cash from cocaine cartels. Dumars defies regular procedure after comprehending the significant risk involved in seizing such a substantial amount of money. He also seizes the team’s phones without informing higher authority. Following a tense meeting with two local Hialeah cops, the squad follows protocol and arms themselves while counting the money on the spot. Ro uses a burner phone in secret.

Desi clarifies that if the stash was found, she was told to offer a portion of the money. When Dumars finds out she was a police informant in the past, he becomes skeptical. Byrne confronts Dumars for lying about the initial tip, which he won’t reveal him, while the team is threatened with leaving due to unexplained calls to the house. Byrne calls DEA Agent Matty Nix out of concern that the lieutenant is getting ready to steal the money, and Nix speculates that Dumars might have been connected to Velez’s demise. Byrne examines a nearby house by himself after realizing the cartel controls the deserted neighborhood, while Desi alerts Ro that she heard Dumars persuade Baptiste and Salazar to assist in robbing the stockpile.

The house is under intense gunfire when the power is turned off. While Dumars and Ro drive the gunmen away, Salazar sustains injuries. From the nearby house, Byrne shows up with a cartel lookout who telephones his boss. He clarifies that the cartel is willing to give up their money and that they did not attack the detectives, but he cautions that Velez might have been murdered by a member of her own team. As Nix and his group arrive, the home catches fire, Byrne and Dumars turn against one another, and Ro loses his phone during the altercation. The other detectives follow Nix and the cash bags in the rear of an armored car, leaving Baptiste and Salazar with Desi.

Velez sent him the tip prior to her murder, according to Dumars, with the intention of using the residence as bait for the dishonest heist team. He tricked everyone into thinking he was taking the money in order to compel them to take action. He concluded that Ro was working with the group, which included Nix and the Hialeah cops, when the unidentified callers mentioned the sum of money Dumars had given Ro. Nix and his men had made the threatening calls and fired at the house, while Ro had started the fire. Dumars admits that he told Byrne about his plan in the house next door, and during the altercation, Byrne took Ro’s burner. Ro then verifies Nix’s participation with the burner.

Dayo Reyes, the driver, is killed in the ensuing altercation after Nix opens fire, while Ro and Dumars sustain injuries. Nix acknowledges that he and Ro ambushed Velez, but the authorities corner the gang since Byrne had already informed his brother Del, an FBI agent. While Nix drives Byrne on a car pursuit and crashes, Byrne shoots Nix when he tries to draw his gun, and Dumars pursues and arrests Ro. The crew returns the real money after exchanging the pilfered funds for phone books that Desi’s grandma has kept. Twenty percent of the seizure is given to a thankful Desi in exchange for her cooperation. In Velez’s memory, Dumars and Byrne watch the sun rise on the beach.
