TheatreIn 1999, Bala made his debut as a writer and director of the Tamil-language romantic tragedy film Sethu. Starring in the movie are Abitha and Vikram. Ilaiyaraaja created the soundtrack and score, while Raghu Baabu edited and R. Rathnavelu took care of the cinematography.
Released on December 10, 1999, Sethu started out as a single midday presentation in a suburban theater but grew its audience over time thanks to word-of-mouth marketing. It was Vikram’s first big breakout movie and a sleeper smash. It took home the Best Film title at the Filmfare and Cinema Express Awards, as well as the National Film Award for Best Tamil Feature Film. For their efforts, Bala and Vikram were also recognized with other accolades. The movie was recreated in Hindi as Tere Naam, Telugu as Seshu, and Kannada as Huchcha.
Chiyaan, a tough college student who leads the Student Union and has a violent temper, is the main character of the movie. He frequently gets into arguments with his older brother, Vasudevan, a magistrate. The only person who really gets Sethu is his sister-in-law.
Sethu wins the Student Union election at the start of the novel, and there are riots and a brawl on campus. When Sethu meets Abitha, a shy Brahmin girl, he begins to transform from his aggressive nature. He teases her at first, but he eventually comes to appreciate her naivete. As they interact more, Sethu falls in love with her, and even his friends notice positive changes in him. He helps Abitha by using his position to let her take an exam she was previously denied.
In the meantime, after being abused by her husband over dowry, Abitha’s sister goes back home to ask for assistance. She has trouble getting a loan that she can pay back. Abitha doesn’t share Sethu’s feelings as he awkwardly proclaims his love to her. He threatens her prospective fiancé and grows possessive.
After an open rejection from Abitha, Sethu confronts Abitha and realizes he has been acting irresponsibly. Despite his sadness for Abitha, he apologizes to his pals. Although he originally believes Abitha’s sister to be a prostitute, he later uncovers a brothel ring and saves her.
After seeing Sethu’s valiant deed, Abitha’s fiancé recognizes his genuine intentions. Abitha begins to comprehend Sethu better as he tells her about his actual character. But after violently expressing his sentiments and coercing Abitha into accepting his love, Sethu abducts her. Abitha eventually returns his affection.
Sethu confronts Abitha after she publicly rejects him and discovers that he has been acting carelessly. He apologizes to his friends despite his sorrow for Abitha. After discovering a brothel ring, he saves Abitha’s sister, despite his first belief that she is a prostitute.
Abitha’s fiancé acknowledges Sethu’s sincere intentions after witnessing his heroic deed. As Sethu reveals his true nature to Abitha, she starts to understand him better. Sethu, however, kidnaps Abitha after forcefully expressing his feelings and forcing her to acknowledge his love. Eventually, Abitha reciprocates his love.
Abitha is convinced to marry her fiancé by her father and Vasudevan since they believe Sethu would never recover. Sethu, who is determined to meet her despite the brain injury, manages to escape and makes it to Abitha’s house, but it is too late when he discovers her body and a group of people in sorrow, discovering that she has committed suicide. Sethu is devastated to learn that his efforts were in vain. Despite their efforts to stop him, he limps away and lets himself be returned to the institution, rejecting his friends and family. After his true love dies, Sethu leaves with them at the end of the film, having lost everything.
