Indian film director, screenwriter, and producer Bala is active in the Tamil film industry. Bala has received accolades for “revolutionizing Tamil cinema” because of his gloomy, realistic, and unsettling celluloid portrayal of the working poor. “Bala is unique in many ways,” stated Shaji N. Karun, head of the 56th National Film Awards jury. It was admirable how he transformed a character in Tamil movies. Many made an effort to make a change. Bala is at the forefront of the new wave of filmmakers who are changing the perspective and method of Tamil cinema.”
Lyricist Arivumathi presented director Balu Mahendra to Bala. He started off under him as a production assistant.Subsequently, Bala began assisting him in the filmmaking process. In 1999, Bala made his directing debut with Sethu, which helped the film’s lead actor, Vikram, who had been suffering for nearly ten years in the Tamil film industry without a hit or notoriety, get a break. The film’s terrible finale made more than sixty distributors hesitate to screen it.
The movie debuted quietly and without any promotion, but after a few days it began playing to full houses purely on “word of mouth.” The blockbuster movie was praised by critics and was considered to have started a ‘new wave’. Remakes in Telugu (Seshu), Hindi (Tere Naam), and Kannada (Huchcha) were produced as a result of its popularity.
E4 Entertainment purchased the rights to Varmaa, the Tamil version of Arjun Reddy, and Bala was selected to direct it. The main photo shoot was completed in September 2018. E4 Entertainment said in a press release on February 7, 2019, that they would reshoot the entire thing since they were unhappy with Bala’s final cut.
They also mentioned that Dhruv, the main actor, will be returning for the film’s relaunch along with an entirely new cast and crew. Bala disagreed with these remarks, claiming that he made the decision to leave the movie “to protect creative freedom” after being requested to make adjustments. This marked the first instance in Tamil cinema history where the film’s producer declined to distribute the finished product because of an inadequate final cut.
Bala grew up in Madurai, where she was born. His mother was a stay-at-home mom, and his father was employed at a bank in Madurai. Bala graduated from American College with the intention of entering the Tamil film industry. Bala has a daughter with Muthumalar, whom she married in 2004. In 2022, Bala and Muthumalar called it quits on their 18-year marriage.
