TheatreThe lead role in Selvaraghavan’s 2006 Indian Tamil-language crime action film Pudhupettai (translates to “New Hood”) goes to his brother Dhanush, with supporting performances from Sonia Agarwal and Sneha. The story begins with Kokki Kumar (played by Dhanush), a young boy from the slums, witnessing the brutal murder of his father by a local gangster. This incident sets Kokki on a path of vengeance and survival in the crime-ridden world of Chennai’s underworld.
Kokki Kumar starts his journey by initially working under local dons and gradually rises through the ranks due to his wit, ruthlessness, and ambition. He becomes a feared and powerful figure in the criminal underworld, known for his cunning and ability to eliminate his rivals.
The film explores Kokki’s relationships with various characters, including his love interest, prostitute Krishnaveni (played by Sneha), and his loyal friend and sidekick Selvam (played by Sonia Agarwal). As Kokki Kumar climbs the ladder of power, he faces numerous challenges and betrayals. His journey is marked by violence, betrayal, and a constant struggle to maintain his dominance in the underworld while dealing with personal losses and tragedies.
The climax of the film is intense and tragic, reflecting the harsh realities of life in the underworld. “Pudhupettai” is known for its raw portrayal of the gritty realities of Chennai’s slums and its depiction of a protagonist driven by ambition and vengeance.
