Laal Singh Chaddha, released in 2022, is a comedy-drama film in Hindi, directed by Advait Chandan and scripted by Atul Kulkarni. Produced by Paramount Pictures, Aamir Khan Productions, and Viacom18 Studios, the movie is an officially authorized adaptation of the 1994 American film Forrest Gump, which, in turn, is based on Winston Groom’s novel of the same name. Aamir Khan takes on the role of the titular character, supported by Kareena Kapoor Khan, Naga Chaitanya (making his Hindi film debut), and Mona Singh.
“Laal Singh Chaddha” was shot across more than 100 locations in India. Filming began in October 2019 and concluded in September 2021, facing several delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite being initially slated for multiple cinema release dates between 2020 and 2022, the film experienced persistent delays due to production interruptions caused by the pandemic. Eventually, it was globally released in theaters on 11 August 2022, coinciding with Raksha Bandhan and Independence Day. The film received mixed reviews from both critics and audiences. While it was praised for its adaptation to the new setting, fidelity to the source material, depth, soundtrack, background score, and emotional aspects, it faced criticism for Aamir Khan’s performance. With a budget of ₹1.8 billion, the film generated a worldwide revenue of less than ₹900 million in its first week, leading to its classification as a box-office disappointment.
Plot
In 2014, on a train journey to Karauli, a man named Laal Singh Chaddha shares his life story with strangers while enjoying golgappas. As a boy in 1977, Laal, with an IQ of 75, wears leg braces to correct a curved spine. Living in Karoli, Punjab, with his supportive mother, he befriends Rupa D’Souza on the first day of school, and they become best friends. Facing bullying, Laal discovers his talent for running when his leg braces come off. Amidst family tragedies and the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, Laal meets a young Shah Rukh Khan and helps him with dance steps.
To protect Laal from rioters, his mother cuts his hair and removes his turban, concealing his Sikh identity. Sent to Hindu College in Delhi, Laal witnesses significant events like L.K. Advani’s Ram Rath Yatra. In 1999, during the Kargil War, Laal, along with friend Bala, is in the same battalion. Despite Rupa’s advice to run when in danger, Laal risks his life to save others, earning recognition but losing Bala. Rupa, pursuing dreams in Mumbai, faces a difficult life, while Laal joins the army.
In a tragic turn, Rupa falls into the clutches of a gangster. Laal intervenes, declaring his love, but Rupa rejects him. Laal encounters Mohammed Paaji, the Pakistani commander he saved, and they become friends. Starting an undergarment business with Paaji, Laal faces challenges until they rename it Rupa, boosting sales. They achieve success, but Mohammed eventually returns to his country. Laal, dealing with personal losses, dedicates himself to his mother’s land. Rupa returns, and they find love, but she gets arrested for links to the underworld.
Heartbroken, Laal embarks on a cross-country marathon. After years of running, he stops, tired and longing for home. Back home, Laal reunites with Rupa, who served her sentence and lives in Chandigarh. They marry, and Laal discovers he is the father of her son, Aman. Rupa dies, and Laal cares for Aman, completing the circle of life by sending him to the same school he attended.
