An Indian director of photography is Satyajit Pandey, also referred to as Setu. He was born in Calcutta and attended St. Xavier’s College to earn his B. Com. Setu was introduced to photography by his famous cinematographer uncle Ranjan Palit and his wife, who also makes documentaries. If he wants to become successful, his uncle encouraged him to move to Mumbai.
He first served as Anil Mehta’s apprentice before working for Sanjay Leela Bhansali. He then pursued cinematography studies at Pune’s Film and Television Institute of India (FTII). After that, he relocated to Mumbai where he worked as Tigmanshu Dhulia’s assistant on the films Haasil (2003) and Charas (2004). After that, he and Shoojit Sircar collaborated on a number of ads.
Actor Aamir Khan asked Sircar to work on his first film as a director, Taare Zameen Par, at the time. Sircar, who was otherwise occupied at the moment and unable to accept the offer, suggests Setu to Aamir instead. He might have become the film’s DoP by chance. He received a lot of fame from the movie, but he didn’t receive many film opportunities. Perhaps it was due to the recession the movie business was going through at the time.
So he made the decision to start filming commercials and documentaries again. His documentaries include Jari Mari and Dam/Age, among others. A number of advertisements for ICICI, Yamaha, Reliance, Maggi, and other brands were also produced by him. Sujoy Ghosh, who is also a film director, was immensely impressed with his uncle’s work on Saat Khoon Maaf.
In order to get the project, he proposed Setu rather than asking his uncle to sign for Kahaani because the latter was too preoccupied with Saat Khoon Maaf. Raj Kumar Gupta then made him an opportunity to work on his forthcoming movie, Ghanchakkar. He also filmed Nirakar Chhaya, a Bengali movie by Ashish Avikunthak. He appeared in two short films, one of which, Reflections by Vijay Nambiar, won the Best Cinematography award at the New York Short Film Festival.
