Kamini Kaushal, born in Lahore, is the youngest among two brothers and three sisters. Her father, Prof. Shiv Ram Kashyap, a distinguished botanist, is considered the father of Indian Botany. Despite losing her father at a young age, she pursued a B.A. (honors) in English literature from Government College in Lahore. Kamini started her film career with Chetan Anand’s Neecha Nagar in 1946.
In her teenage years, she was more focused on activities like swimming, riding, skating, and radio plays on Akashwani. After her sister’s tragic death, she married her brother-in-law, B.S. Sood, in 1948. They settled in Bombay, where she became a pioneering figure as the first leading heroine to continue working after marriage.
Kamini, an educated actress with a Bharatnatyam background, worked with top actors of her time, including Ashok Kumar, Raj Kapoor, Dev Anand, Raaj Kumar, and Dilip Kumar. Her successful films included Shaheed, Pugree, Nadiya Ke Paar, and Arzoo. Notably, Lata Mangeshkar sang her first film song in Ziddi (1948).
After transitioning to character roles in the mid-’60s, Kamini’s performances were lauded in films like Waris, Vishwas, and Aadmi Aur Insaan. She worked with Manoj Kumar in multiple films and portrayed diverse characters in various movies until 2014.
Her personal life, marked by a rejected proposal from Dilip Kumar due to her prior marriage, also saw her successful foray into puppet shows, children’s stories, and television serials. Kamini Kaushal remains an influential figure in Indian cinema with a career spanning decades.
