TheatreThe Marvel Comics character of the same name appears in the 2024 American superhero movie Kraven the Hunter. Ariana DeBose, Fred Hechinger, Alessandro Nivola, Christopher Abbott, Russell Crowe, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson play Kraven the Hunter in the film, which was directed by J. C. Chandor and based on a script by Richard Wenk, Art Marcum, and Matt Holloway. In collaboration with Marvel Entertainment, Columbia Pictures produced the sixth movie in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (SSU). The movie examines Kraven’s journey to become the best hunter as well as his connection with his father.
Before Sony Pictures expressed interest in a stand-alone movie based on Kraven as part of its new shared universe in 2017, the character was considered for multiple film appearances. August 2018 saw the hiring of Wenk, followed by Marcum and Holloway. With Taylor-Johnson’s casting in May 2021, Chandor’s directorship was confirmed, having begun discussions in August 2020. Before filming in London, Iceland, and Glasgow from late March to mid-June 2022, more cast members joined in early 2022.
On December 13, 2024, Sony Pictures Releasing finally released Kraven the Hunter in the United States after two years of delays. On a budget of $110–130 million, the movie has made $4.7 million worldwide. It has gotten mostly bad reviews, with some praising the action scenes and Taylor-Johnson’s performance while others have criticized the plot, writing, and special effects.
After his mother dies, Sergei Kravinoff and his half-brother Dmitri are abducted by their father Nikolai so that they can be ready to take over his drug trafficking business. After saving his brother from a lion while hunting in Africa, Sergei suffers a fatal wound. When he is on the verge of death, a girl named Calypso finds him. She phones for help and gives him a serum, leaving a tarot card behind. Her grandmother had warned her that she would step in during an accident and grant its victim enormous power. Sergei finds his physical characteristics have turned animalistic, becomes disgusted by his father’s behavior, and runs away to a secret refuge when Nikolai discloses that he killed the lion to teach his boys a lesson.
Sergei, now known as Kraven, is a vigilante who kills offenders years later. Kraven visits London on Dmitri’s birthday after murdering an arms trafficker in a Russian jail. He goes for a walk that night since he can’t sleep, which results in Dmitri being taken prisoner by mercenaries. After Nikolai declines to pay the ransom, Kraven finds Calypso, who is now a lawyer, and persuades her to assist in locating his brother’s abductors.
Aleksei Sytsevich, the leader of his captors and a mercenary who participated in an experiment that gave him the strength and appearance of a rhinoceros, approaches Dmitri and offers to form an alliance to topple Nikolai. Aleksei leads Dmitri to an abandoned monastery in Turkey after learning about Kraven’s relationship with him, but Kraven escapes the ambush. The Foreigner, an assassin who has spent years studying Kraven’s attack patterns and uses ocular hypnosis to confuse his targets, then approaches him and offers to murder him.
Aleksei and the Foreigner track Kraven and Calypso to his hideaway, use Dmitri as bait, and ambush Kraven when he tries to murder them. The Foreigner attacks him after giving him a neurotoxic drug, but Calypso uses a crossbow to kill him and bring Kraven back to life. He then traps Aleksei with a herd of buffaloes, and although he transforms into the Rhino and momentarily defeats Kraven, he is speared to death.
