TheatreChhichhore, released in 2019, is an Indian Hindi-language coming-of-age comedy-drama film directed by Nitesh Tiwari. Tiwari collaborated with Piyush Gupta and Nikhil Mehrotra on the screenplay, and Sajid Nadiadwala produced it under Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment, while Fox Star Studios secured the distribution rights. Drawing from Tiwari’s experiences as a student at the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, the movie features Sushant Singh Rajput, Shraddha Kapoor, Varun Sharma, Tahir Raj Bhasin, Naveen Polishetty, Tushar Pandey, and Saharsh Kumar Shukla in pivotal roles, with Shishir Sharma and Mohammad Samad in supporting capacities.
Plot
Anirudh “Anni” Pathak is a middle-aged divorcee living with his son Raghav, an aspiring engineer awaiting entrance exam results for the Indian Institute of Technology. Unaware of Raghav’s intense pressure, Anni gifts him a bottle of champagne on the eve of the results, promising to celebrate together. However, Raghav, fearing the “loser” label, attempts suicide after discovering exam failure but survives in a critical state. At the hospital, Anni recounts his college experiences to rekindle hope in Raghav, portraying himself and his friends as former “losers.”
The narrative shifts to 1992 when Anni starts college at Hostel 4, infamous for “losers.” Anni befriends senior Gurmeet “Sexa” Singh Dhillon, a hyper-sexual individual, and the story unfolds, intertwined with Raghav’s present condition. As the friends reunite, they share college memories, including pro-ragging incidents, sundry tales of hostel life, and their triumphs and failures in the General Championship (GC) sports competition.
Back in 1992, Anni attempts to change hostels but declines the offer, choosing to stay with H4’s misfit tag. They embark on a journey to transform H4’s reputation by excelling in the GC. Anni’s stories parallel the present as Raghav’s health deteriorates, and the ‘losers’ unite to support Anni and Maya.
The climax of the college story reveals H4’s near-win in the GC against H3. Despite losing, Raghav realizes the value of effort over results. In the present, Raghav faces a critical moment, contemplating suicide after a loss. However, Anni’s friends, reflecting on their past, respond with a resounding “NO,” emphasizing the importance of effort and resilience.
Encouraged by their college victory, Raghav faces his challenges with determination. A year later, he enters college, embracing life and rejecting societal expectations. The narrative concludes with a matured Raghav, symbolizing resilience, surrounded by apparitions of his younger self, parents, and ‘loser’ friends, embodying the triumph of life’s challenges.
