Raj Kapoor, born on August 15, 1958, is an Indian film director and actor, primarily recognized for his contributions to Tamil cinema. He also extended his acting career to encompass supporting roles in Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada films. Kapoor’s journey in the world of cinema began as an assistant director to the renowned filmmaker C. V. Sridhar during the golden era of Tamil cinema.
He eventually ventured into independent film direction, with his directorial debut being “Thalattu Ketkuthamma” in 1991. Some of his notable directorial works include “Uthama Raasa” (1993) featuring Prabhu and Khushbu, as well as “Aval Varuvala” (1998) starring Ajith and Simran. Kapoor continued to direct films like “Anantha Poongatre” (1999) with Ajith and Meena, “Sudhandhiram” (2000) with Arjun, and “Vambu Sandai” (2008) with Sathyaraj.
Despite his successful directorial career, Kapoor made his acting debut in the film “Thalaimurai” (1998) and expressed his intention to continue acting in films alongside his directorial pursuits. In the early 2000s, he embarked on a big-budget family drama project titled “Enna Vilai Azhagae,” featuring Prashanth and Amisha Patel.
However, despite completing a significant portion of the film, including schedules in Paris, the project was ultimately shelved and remains unreleased. Kapoor later transitioned into directing television serials, with one of his most notable works being Sundar C.’s “Nandini,” which aired on Sun TV. He also directed a few episodes of “Rasaathi” and “Jothi.”
On a personal note, Kapoor’s son, Sharook Kapoor, began assisting his father in film direction. Tragically, on February 17, 2020, Sharook Kapoor passed away while on a pilgrimage in Mecca with his mother, marking a devastating loss for the family.
