Y. G. Mahendran, born on January 9, 1950, is a multi-talented Indian figure known for his roles as an actor, dramatist, singer, comedian, and playwright, predominantly active in the Tamil Nadu region. His father, Y. G. Parthasarathy, was a pivotal figure in modern Tamil drama, while his mother, Rajalakshmi Parthasarathy, founded the esteemed Padma Seshadri Bala Bhavan group of schools. He is also the nephew of renowned Tamil filmmaker K. Balaji and shares familial connections with acclaimed actress Vyjayanthimala, as well as being the co-brother of Rajinikanth and Mohanlal.
Growing up in a family deeply involved in theater, Mahendran developed an early affinity for drama. He engaged in comedic roles during school plays and gained recognition for his talents. After completing his schooling at Don Bosco Egmore, he pursued Chemical Engineering at A. C. College of Technology, Guindy, and later pursued an MBA. His immersion in his father’s drama troupe, the United Amateur Artists (UAA), marked a turning point, as his success in numerous plays earned him a reputation in the city. Balancing his career prospects, he ultimately chose to focus on acting over his academic path.
Mahendran’s cinematic journey began in 1971 when director K. Balachander cast him in “Navagraham.” His unique nasal accent lent itself to comedic roles, often portraying dim-witted characters or amusing cousins. Over his four-decade-long career, he appeared in more than 200 films, sharing the screen with prominent actors like Sivaji Ganesan, Jaishankar, Kamal Haasan, and his brother-in-law, Rajinikanth. His collaborations with Rajinikanth include movies like “Pokkiri Raja,” “Paayum Puli,” and “Veera,” while his work with Kamal Haasan includes films like “Apoorva Raagangal” and “Neeya.”
Outside of the entertainment industry, Mahendran ventured into the realm of industrial ceramics and established a successful company in 1982. He later sold this business in 2001 before making a return to production and acting. His opinions on various subjects, including a speech on the Citizenship Amendment Act protests, have stirred controversy and garnered both criticism and praise across different social media platforms.
