Rene Russo
Biography:
Rene Russo was born in 1954 in Burbank, California, to Shirley (Balocca), who worked in factories and as a barmaid, and Nino Russo, a sculptor and car mechanic who left the family when she was two. Of Italian descent, Russo grew up with her mother and sister Toni (later married to lyricist Bernie Taupin). She attended Burroughs High School, where future director Ron Howard was a classmate. Suffering from scoliosis, she wore a full-body brace, and her tall frame earned her the nickname “Jolly Green Giant.” In a 2019 interview, she described herself as a “geek,” admitting she was bullied in high school and dropped out in tenth grade. With money scarce, she helped her mother by taking odd jobs, including at an eyeglass factory and a movie theater, before being scouted as a model in New York—a city she found intimidating compared to her hometown.
According to reports, Russo was first noticed at a 1972 Rolling Stones concert by John Crosby of International Creative Management, who encouraged her to pursue modeling. She signed with Ford Modeling Agency and became one of the top models of the 1970s and early 1980s, appearing on magazine covers such as Vogue, Cosmopolitan, and Mademoiselle, and working in major fashion and cosmetic campaigns. Vogue later described her look as both accessible and aspirational, praising her versatility and poise.
By her 30s, modeling opportunities declined, and Russo shifted her focus to acting. She studied theater, performed in small productions, and trained with actor Allan Rich. Her television debut came in 1987 with a role in the short-lived series Sable, followed by her film debut in Major League (1989), a well-received comedy.
Her breakthrough came with Lethal Weapon 3 (1992), where she played Internal Affairs detective Lorna Cole opposite Mel Gibson and Danny Glover. The film grossed $320 million, making it the most successful of the series. She also appeared that year in the science-fiction film Freejack, which earned her a Saturn Award nomination.
Throughout the 1990s, Russo starred in several major films. She appeared with Clint Eastwood in In the Line of Fire (1993), co-starred with Dustin Hoffman in Outbreak (1995), and played opposite John Travolta in Get Shorty (1995), which topped the box office for three weeks. In 1996, she appeared in the romantic comedy Tin Cup with Kevin Costner and reunited with Gibson in Ron Howard’s thriller Ransom, a commercial hit. Subsequent roles included Buddy (1997), Lethal Weapon 4 (1998), and the remake of The Thomas Crown Affair (1999), where her performance drew strong praise.
In the 2000s, Russo appeared in The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle (2000), earning both Saturn and Razzie Award nominations, followed by Showtime (2002) with Robert De Niro and Eddie Murphy. She also appeared in Big Trouble (2002), which was delayed due to the September 11 attacks. Later, she co-starred with Al Pacino and Matthew McConaughey in Two for the Money (2005) and in the family comedy Yours, Mine & Ours (2005) with Dennis Quaid. Afterward, she took a five-year break to focus on her personal life.
Russo returned to the screen in Kenneth Branagh’s Thor (2011), playing Frigga, the hero’s mother, and reprised the role in Thor: The Dark World (2013) and Avengers: Endgame (2019). She gained recognition with a new generation of viewers through these films.
In 2014, she earned acclaim for her role in Nightcrawler, directed by her husband Dan Gilroy, with critics calling it her best work in years. She followed with Frank and Cindy (2015), The Intern (2015) alongside Robert De Niro, Just Getting Started (2017) with Morgan Freeman and Tommy Lee Jones, and Velvet Buzzsaw (2019) on Netflix, again directed by Gilroy.
Russo married Dan Gilroy in 1992 after meeting during the filming of Freejack. They have a daughter, Rose, who has worked as a model, and live in Brentwood, Los Angeles. In 2014, Russo revealed she has bipolar disorder, a condition she has dealt with since childhood, and shared that she eventually began treatment during a difficult period in her life.
