Ben Jasper whose full name is Benjamin Jasper, is a highly esteemed international cinematographer based in Sydney, Australia. With a career spanning every continent and over 50 cities, he made history as the first cinematographer to film a major action sequence within the Arctic Circle for the movie “War.” His exceptional talent and dedication have earned him widespread industry respect. Jasper’s latest film, set to open on more than 5000 screens, marks a significant milestone in Bollywood history, further demonstrating his impactful contribution to the film industry.
Jasper began his cinematography career in 1992 after earning a BA in Film and Television from Curtin University in Western Australia. Over the next 15 years, he progressed from clapper loader to focus puller, operator, and eventually second unit DOP, working on hundreds of commercials and around 40 feature films and series. In 2007, after the birth of his son Archie, Jasper transitioned from assistant roles to fully commit to a career as a cinematographer. That year, he and his family moved from Sydney, Australia, to Shanghai, China, before eventually returning to Australia, where he is now based in Melbourne and Sydney.
Throughout his career, Jasper has collaborated with world-class directors across various genres and continents. His groundbreaking work includes global campaigns for BMW, dramatic stunts for Mountain Dew, evocative scenes in Varanasi for American Tourister, and major productions like a parade in Johannesburg for Samsung. He also partnered with Wong Kar Wai and associates to shoot a haunting film for KPOP superstar Jolin.
In 2015, he was invited by Siddarth Anand to shoot the Bollywood blockbuster “Bang Bang,” praised for having one of the best car crashes in cinematic history. Jasper reunited with Anand in 2018-19 to film “War,” a challenging production shot in nine countries. Released in August 2019, “War” set box office records, becoming the highest opening day gross in Bollywood history, the highest-grossing Bollywood film of 2019, and one of the top ten highest-grossing Bollywood films of all time. Jasper has been nominated for and won several international awards for his outstanding work in cinematography.
