Nikos Kypourgos, who was born in Athens in 1952, studied law and political science at the University of Athens while also studying music theory and modern music techniques under Yannis Papaioannou. On a scholarship from the Onassis Foundation, he pursued his education at the Conservatoire de Paris, where he studied under well-known composers Max Deutsch, Iannis Xenakis, and others. He also studied music education and ethnomusicology.
He has written operas, chamber music, orchestral music, ballet music, vocal music (Knots, a choral “game” for 16 voices, won first place in the 1979 UNESCO International Rostrum of Composers), and songs.
He has spent the last 25 years working on incidental music for theater, having written music for a wide variety of theatrical genres from ancient Greek drama to modern theater. He has also composed music for more than 60 films in Greece, the United Kingdom, France, Switzerland, Germany, Poland, Turkey, the United States, and Canada, for which he has won more than 20 awards both domestically and internationally.
