Biography:

S.S. Manivannan, widely known as Manivannan, was a prominent figure in Indian cinema, particularly in Tamil films. Born on July 31, 1954, he had a multifaceted career as a film director, actor, and activist. He hailed from Sulur, a small town in Coimbatore District, and came from a family with a political background. Manivannan started as a theatre artist and later transitioned into the film industry, initially working as a story and dialogue writer for director Bharathiraja in the early 1980s.

His journey in the film industry encompassed various roles, from being a writer to a director and an actor. With over 400 films to his credit, Manivannan directed 50 films across different genres, demonstrating his versatility as a filmmaker. However, he gained widespread recognition and popularity as an actor, particularly for his roles as a comedian, supporting character, and even as a villain.

In addition to his contributions to the film world, Manivannan was actively involved in politics and supported several political parties, including the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK). He later aligned himself with the Naam Tamilar Katchi, advocating for Tamil Eelam nationalism.

Manivannan’s passing occurred on June 15, 2013, due to a cardiac arrest at the age of 58.
