Gunasekar served as an associate director for D. V. Narsaraju, Kranthi Kumar, and Ram Gopal Varma before branching out into mainstream filmmaking. With the sociopolitical Lathi (1992), Gunasekhar made his directorial debut and was honored with the state’s Nandi Award for Best First Film of a Director.
He was the director of the hugely popular love story Sogasu Chooda Tharamaa, which won the Nandi Award for Best Feature Film in 1995. The mythological movie Ramayanam, which Gunasekhar directed in 1997, was screened at the International Children’s Film Festival of India and won the National Film Award for Best Children’s Film.
His following movie, the blockbuster action thriller Choodalani Vundi (1998), introduced DTS sound to Telugu cinema. Later, the movie was adapted in Hindi as Calcutta Mail. The political thriller he next produced and directed, Manoharam (2000), won the Nandi Award for Best Feature Film and the Nandi Award for Best Story.
Okkadu, an action movie he filmed in 2003, became the highest-grossing Telugu movie of that year and was translated into many other Indian languages. The International Film Festival of India, the drama movie Arjun from 2004 was shown in the mainstream category.
Despite receiving mostly negative reviews upon its premiere in October 2015, his historical drama Rudhramadevi managed to earn an average amount of money for the year.
Shaakuntalam, a mythological love drama film, was his most recent endeavor and was premiered in theatres on April 14, 2023. Critics blasted the movie, and it was a colossal commercial flop.
