Rich businessman Arul Selvakumar is situated in Palladam, in the Tirupur district. After her husband’s untimely death, Arul’s mother, Bhuvaneshwari, is the driving force behind the expansion of their textile business. Bhuvaneshwari’s brother-in-law Avinashi is a money-minded individual who intends to seize Arul’s holdings. After graduating, Arul returns from his overseas trip and assumes leadership of all the companies his mother owned.
Bhuvaneshwari suffers an accident in the plant and goes into a coma in the interim. Arul has wasted all of his time and energy trying to treat her. By coincidence, Arul meets a sage at the hospital where his mother is receiving treatment, who informs him that there is a way to save his mother.
The sage gives him advice on how to live a 48-day beggar’s life, under two restrictions: he must not reveal his true identity to anyone, and he must not tell anyone else about this. It will give his mother a chance to live if he succeeds.
Arul agrees to both terms because there is no other way to save his mother. He tells his friend Rajesh to handle the company’s affairs until he gets back. After traveling to Chennai, Arul begs with other homeless people in a temple. It is there that he meets Magizhini and is instantly enamored with her altruistic nature.
Arul remembers that initially, he and his mother had made the decision to use a matchmaking website to ask Magizhini for her hand in marriage. Later on, Magizhini meets Arul as well, and she begins to admire him despite the fact that he is a beggar.
When Avinashi realizes that Arul is not there, he tries to take over Arul’s company. After discovering that Arul is a pauper during a wedding ceremony, Magizhini becomes enraged, believing Arul has deceived her. Even so, she doesn’t shun him because his kindness still makes an impression on her.
One day, Magizhini’s mother notices Arul’s picture on her laptop and remembers that a few months prior, she had shared her own images of herself with him via the matrimonial website. Arul is a wealthy businessman.
After hearing Arul and Rajesh’s chat, Magizhini becomes enraged and goes to meet Arul. She is struck by his kindness and realizes that Arul’s purpose in being a beggar is to help his mother. Despite Rajesh’s persistent pleas, Arul declines to accompany him back. Magizhini chooses to wait to bother Arul until he has finished living as a beggar.
Concurrently, Arul finds out from a panhandler posing as a person with mental illness that a team of medical professionals running a mental health facility using its patients as test subjects for their research. The doctors employ men to kill Arul after realizing this, but Arul escapes the goons. When Arul is discovered by Avinashi on his last day of begging, he tries to kill him but instead stabs Magizhini, who is subsequently taken to the hospital.
Arul, who hasn’t finished his life as a beggar, is in despair since he can’t afford to pay Magizhini’s hospital bills. However, some money from his fellow beggars helps Arul, and Avinashi is taken into custody. After 48 days, Arul returns home with Rajesh to visit his mother, and discovers that her condition has not improved.
Praying for his mother’s recovery, Arul grips her hands. He feels his mother’s hands moving suddenly. Six months later, Bhuvaneshwari makes a full recovery, and Arul and Magizhini tie the knot. A beggar approaches Arul in front of a temple in the credits, pleading for money, but Arul is preoccupied with a phone call and misses the beggar’s plea.
Giving the beggar alms, Bhuvaneshwari tells Arul that a beggar’s life is so pitiful and that they should never injure them because people like themselves cannot live a beggar’s life for even a single day. It is implied that Bhuvaneshwari is not aware that Arul has been living like a beggar for 48 days.
