TheatreIn 2004, the Indian Telugu-language action drama film “Arjun” was brought to the screen, with Gunasekhar as the writer and director and G. Ramesh Babu as the producer. The movie featured Mahesh Babu in the lead role, supported by Shriya Saran, Keerthi Reddy, Raja Abel, Prakash Raj, and Saritha. The musical score was composed by Mani Sharma, while Sekhar V. Joseph handled cinematography, and A. Sreekar Prasad took care of the editing.
The film made its theatrical debut on August 18, 2004, and achieved considerable success at the box office. It was subsequently dubbed into Hindi as “Maidan-E-Jung” in 2008 and in Tamil as “Varenda Maduraikku.” “Arjun” was even featured at the International Film Festival of India in the mainstream section. Notably, this marked Keerthi Reddy’s final acting role before her retirement from the film industry, and the film earned three Nandi Awards.
The storyline revolves around Arjun and his twin sister, Meenakshi, who complete their college education. Their parents embark on a quest to find a suitable groom for Meenakshi. However, things take a twist when Meenakshi reveals a letter from their friend Uday, confessing his love for her and proposing elopement due to his parents’ plans for an arranged marriage with another girl.
Arjun, upon learning of this, travels to Madurai, where Uday resides with his parents and is on the verge of an arranged marriage. Arjun confronts Uday’s parents about the letter and seeks their approval for the marriage. Uday, impulsive in his decision, decides to marry Meenakshi without parental consent. Surprisingly, Uday’s parents eventually agree to the union, albeit with ulterior motives.
Meanwhile, Arjun crosses paths with Roopa, another Madurai native, and they fall deeply in love. Back at Meenakshi’s home, Uday’s parents hatch a sinister plan to eliminate her, motivated by the desire to secure a wealthy inheritance through an arranged marriage. They make several attempts on Meenakshi’s life, but she miraculously survives.
Arjun becomes increasingly convinced that his sister’s life is in danger, yet Uday and Meenakshi remain skeptical of his claims. However, Meenakshi finally heeds his warnings when another attempt is made on her life during Uday’s absence. With the help of Arjun and Roopa, she escapes and eventually gives birth to twins.
In the ensuing confrontation, Bala, one of the scheming parents, meets his demise, while Andal, the other parent, is left paralyzed. Uday, having witnessed the truth about his parents’ intentions, comes to believe Arjun’s version of events, leading to a reconciliation among them all, and they strive to lead peaceful lives together.
