Theatre“Suswagatham,” which translates to “Hearty Welcome,” is a 1998 Telugu-language Indian romantic film. It was produced by R. B. Choudary under the banner of Super Good Films and directed by Bhimaneni Srinivasa Rao. The lead roles are played by Pawan Kalyan and Devayani, marking her debut in Telugu cinema. The music for the film was composed by S. A. Rajkumar. It’s noteworthy that “Suswagatham” is a remake of the 1997 Tamil movie “Love Today.” The film received a positive response at the box office, and it’s interesting to mention that Pawan Kalyan, Bhimaneni Srinivasa Rao, and R. B. Choudary joined forces again for “Annavaram” in 2006.
Ganesh (played by Pawan Kalyan), a college graduate, has spent the last four years secretly pursuing Sandhya, a fellow college student, in an attempt to express his love for her. Despite numerous warnings from Sandhya to cease his pursuit, Ganesh persists in his affections. Ganesh’s friend Peter (portrayed by Karan) introduces him to Sandhya’s friend (played by Sadhika) in the hopes of seeking assistance in his romantic endeavors, but these efforts prove futile.
On his birthday, Ganesh decides to finally reveal his feelings to Sandhya. However, this heartfelt confession leads to an unfortunate turn of events as Sandhya’s father (depicted by Prakash Raj), a police officer, apprehends Ganesh for what he perceives as harassment of his daughter. Ganesh finds himself in a difficult situation, with legal consequences looming.
In the midst of this crisis, Ganesh’s father, Dr. Chandrashekhar, a respected psychologist (played by Raghuvaran), steps in to bail him out. The bond between Ganesh and his father is exceptionally strong, especially since Ganesh lost his mother during his childhood. Despite his father’s leniency in handling the situation, he advises Ganesh and his friends to find employment and establish themselves.
One day, overwhelmed by his longing for Sandhya, Ganesh opens up to his father, expressing the depth of his feelings. To his surprise, his father agrees to pursue a marriage proposal for him, reflecting the genuine understanding and support within their relationship. Ganesh’s father takes the initiative to propose marriage to Sandhya’s father.
However, as is often the case, Sandhya’s father responds with arrogance and utter disrespect. He insults Ganesh’s father with thoughtless words. Frustrated by this encounter, Sandhya’s father initially decides to relocate his daughter and wife to his sister’s residence in Hyderabad. However, he experiences a change of heart during the bus journey.
In the midst of this, Ganesh mistakenly believes that Sandhya has already moved to Hyderabad, prompting him to embark on a quest to find her there. Meanwhile, on the very same day, tragedy strikes as Ganesh’s father meets with a fatal accident. He witnesses a heart-wrenching incident where a young man takes his own life due to the anguish of his girlfriend leaving him.
Ganesh’s friends make desperate efforts to locate him during this tumultuous time, but their attempts prove futile. Eventually, Peter steps in to perform the last rites for Ganesh’s father, as his son is nowhere to be found. When Ganesh finally returns, he is devastated to learn that he couldn’t even fulfill the final rites for his beloved father, adding to his heartache.
Sandhya has a profound realization of her love for Ganesh. She musters the courage to disclose her feelings to him, expressing her deep affection and desire to spend her entire life with him. She earnestly asks him to wait for her at their usual bus stop. However, Ganesh, despite her sincere confession, rebuffs her love. He candidly shares that he feels he has sacrificed four years of his life, as well as his father’s life, for the pursuit of her love, and he concludes that she is not worth it.
Undeterred by Ganesh’s rejection, Sandhya faithfully returns to the bus stop the next day, continuing to wait for his arrival. Meanwhile, Ganesh’s friends embark on a new venture, opening a restaurant in honor of his father’s memory. Ganesh, respecting his father’s wishes, proceeds to attend a job interview that his father had suggested for him.
