Plot
The film commences with the penance of Sage Bhadra (Sarath Babu), who, blessed by Lord Rama, transforms into a hill. Centuries later, Dammakka (Sujatha), a tribal woman and devout worshiper of Lord Rama, discovers and cares for the idols of Rama on the hill, eagerly awaiting someone to build a temple there. In parallel, Gopanna and his cousin Kamala fall in love, overcoming minor conflicts with their parents to marry. Following their union, Tanisha, the Golconda emperor, appoints Gopanna as Tehsildar of Husnabad on the recommendation of Gopanna’s uncles, Akkanna and Madanna, resulting in the displacement of the existing Muslim Tehsildar. This decision incites displeasure among certain factions who attempt to assassinate Gopanna. Saved by Dammakka on the banks of Godavari, Gopanna discovers Bhadragiri and becomes a devoted Rama worshiper.
After a series of events, Gopanna resolves to construct the Rama Mandir on the hill. With financial contributions from the public and guidance from his guru Kabirdas, he successfully completes the temple’s construction. Throughout the process, Lord Rama, Lakshmana, Seetha, and Anjaneya invisibly inhabit the site, safeguarding Gopanna until his mission is accomplished. Gopanna, now known as Ramadasu, faces opposition from his enemies who falsely inform Tanisha that he used funds without the king’s permission. Consequently, Tanisha imprisons Ramadasu. Enduring hardships in captivity, Ramadasu is eventually released after Lord Rama and Lakshmana, appearing in Tanisha’s dream, settle the debt. Tanisha discovers that the divine duo cleared the debt.
Following his release, Ramadasu, disappointed at not having a direct darshanam (appearance) of Rama, realizes the Lord resides in his heart. In a symbolic gesture, he opens his chest, and Rama and Sitamma emerge, healing his wounds. Rama offers Ramadasu the opportunity to go to Vaikunta as a living man, a rare boon. Curious about Vaikunta, Ramadasu learns from Rama that it is a realm of perpetual happiness where prayer is unnecessary. However, Gopanna finds joy only in uttering Rama’s name. Despite being the sole individual to decline Vaikuntha, Rama grants his wish: Ramadasu’s spirit will forever reside in the Bhadrachalam Temple. The movie concludes with Sri Ramadasu, formerly Kancherla Gopanna, gazing affectionately at the temple in the present day.
