Biography:

Akkineni Nageswara Rao, affectionately known as ANR, was a renowned Indian actor and producer, leaving an indelible mark on Telugu cinema. His extensive career spanned an impressive seventy-five years, during which he played pivotal roles in numerous landmark films, establishing himself as a prominent figure in the Telugu film industry. Recognized for his contributions, he garnered seven state Nandi Awards and five Filmfare Awards South.

The accolades extended to the Dada Saheb Phalke Award and Padma Vibhushan, India’s second-highest civilian honor, acknowledging his impact on the realms of Art and Cinema. ANR’s versatility shone through his portrayal of various historical and mythological figures in biographical films. From the Tamil saint Vipra Narayana to the 12th-century Sanskrit poet Jayadeva, he demonstrated a nuanced and multifaceted acting prowess.

His repertoire extended to embodying figures such as Lord Vishnu, Narada, and Arjuna in mythological dramas. The actor is equally celebrated for his roles in romantic dramas, with memorable performances in films like Laila Majnu, Devadasu, and Prema Nagar. Blockbusters like Balaraju, Ardhangi, and Gundamma Katha showcased his commercial and critical success.

ANR’s impact extended beyond his acting prowess; he played a vital role in relocating the Telugu film industry from Madras to Hyderabad in the 1970s. In 1976, ANR established Annapurna Studios to provide essential infrastructure support to Telugu cinema in Hyderabad, underscoring his commitment to the industry’s growth. He furthered this commitment by founding the Annapurna International School of Film and Media in 2011.

Despite his passing during the production of Manam in 2014, his legacy endures. Born into a lower-middle-class family in 1924, ANR’s early life was marked by economic constraints, limiting his formal education. His foray into theater at the age of 10 paved the way for a career in acting. The turning point came when he was discovered by film producer Ghantasala Balaramayya at the Vijayawada railway station, leading to his debut in Sri Seeta Rama Jananam.

ANR’s filmography boasts over 255 films in Telugu, Tamil, and Hindi. His roles in movies like Devadasu and Navaratri, where he portrayed nine different characters, garnered widespread acclaim. Despite often playing mythological characters, ANR remained an atheist, emphasizing his dedication to his craft. Beyond acting, ANR was a beacon of social service, actively involved in initiatives like the Akkineni Janmabhoomi trust, Akkineni Varadhi bridge construction, and educational contributions.

His philanthropic endeavors included the establishment of the Akkineni International Foundation, scholarships at GITAM University, and the Akkineni Annapurna Educational Trust. Married to Annapurna in 1949, ANR had five children: Nagarjuna, Venkat Rathnam, Saroja, Sathyavathi, and Naga Susheela. Annapurna Studios, named in honor of his wife, became a significant entity in Telugu cinema. Diagnosed with stomach cancer in 2013, ANR continued shooting for Manam after a major surgery.

His last public appearance was at the foundation day celebrations of Annapurna Studios in January 2014. ANR passed away on January 22, 2014, leaving behind a rich legacy. His cremation at Annapurna Studios, accompanied by a 21-gun salute, drew thousands who came to pay their final respects to the legendary actor and philanthropist.
