OTTIn her first directing role, Tahira Kashyap Khurrana wrote and directed the 2024 Hindi-language comedy-drama Sharmajee Ki Beti for Amazon Prime Video under the Applause Entertainment and Ellipsis Entertainment banners. Sakshi Tanwar, Divya Dutta, Saiyami Kher, Parvin Dabas, and Sharib Hashmi play important parts. It was made available on Amazon Prime on June 28, 2024. In August 2021, Tahira Kashyap Khurrana made the announcement. In Chandigarh and Mumbai, principal photography started the same month. November 2022 marked the end of the filming.
In his review, NDTV’s Saibal Chatterjee gave the film three stars and stated, It is a lively, warm film marked by insight, intelligence, and imagination and buoyed by a bunch of flawless performances. It’s all very likeable even if predictable, because this is not the kind of film that’s going to leave any of its characters hanging or desolate,” said Shubhra Gupta of The Indian Express, who gave it a rating of 2.5/5 stars. Sukanya Verma of Rediff.com wasn’t positive about the movie and opined “Wanting to normalise menstruation and homosexuality is always appreciated but Sharmajee Ki Beti’s airy-fairy approach doesn’t quite convince.
Hindustan Times’ Monika Rawal Kukreja said, Divya Dutta’s endearing portrayal of a housewife embarking on a quest for self-discovery is what really steals the show in Sharmajee Ki Beti. Arushi Jain of India Today also provided a critical assessment. “Over its nearly two-hour runtime, it takes some effort to sit through.
It is a good attempt from a debutante director, but the film is, at best, a one-time feel-good watch,” said Snigdha Nalini of Outlook India. The New Indian Express’s Shreyas Pande gave the movie a meager 1.5 out of 5 stars, writing, “The film doesn’t believe in thoughtful reflection and merely underlines some pre-existing issues faced by women.” According to Times Now’s Sonal Pandya, It would have been easier to keep the focus on the teenage girls and their families.
It’s easy to make a big film about big things with big characters, said Suparna Sharma of The Week. However, writing about everyday events with subtlety is never easy. Divya Dutta’s performance was lauded by Nandini Ramnath of Scroll.in, who stated, Dutta is an endearing superwoman, even though Kiran’s track is the most complicated as well as the most easily resolved. The Quint’s Pratikshya Mishra provided a favorable review with 3.5 out of 5. Tahira Kashyap Khurrana’s film leaves you wanting more – both of it and from it.
