On June 7, 2024, Munjya was released in theaters around the world. Critics gave it a mixed to favorable reception. Despite a production cost of ₹30 crore, the movie became a sleeper blockbuster, earning ₹132.13 crore globally, making it the seventh highest-grossing Hindi film of 2024.
A young boy named Gotya falls in love with Munni, a girl seven years his senior, in 1952 in Garge hamlet in the Chiplun region of the Konkan. Gotya tries in vain to poison Munni when his marriage is arranged with another guy. Determined to marry Munni, Gotya takes his sister Gita to the deep jungle known as Chetukwadi to conduct black magic under a peepal tree after being reprimanded by his mother and appointed a priest. While attempting to sacrifice his sister, he unintentionally murders himself and becomes as Munjya, a malicious spirit that haunts the tree.
Many years later, in Pune, Bittu is a shy young man who plans to pursue a career in cosmetology while working as a hairdresser at his mother Pammi’s salon. He has a great affection for and bond with his grandmother. Although he hasn’t spoken it, he is in love with Bela, a buddy from his youth. Bittu is devastated when Bela returns from the United States after finishing her studies and her lover Kuba pops the question.
The haunting peepal tree that keeps calling Bittu’s name causes him to have frequent nightmares. Bittu’s cousin Rukku is getting engaged, so his family goes to their ancestral house in Konkan. There, his uncle Balu Kaka discloses that Munjya is thought to have caused Bittu’s father to go insane and pass away close to the cursed tree. Bittu visits the tree despite warnings and becomes possessed by Munjya. Munjya kills Bittu’s grandma, who turns out to be Gotya’s sister Gita, in an attempt to save him. Balu Kaka holds his nephew accountable for his mother’s passing. By psychologically abusing Bittu and threatening Bittu’s mother and those around him, Munjya demands that Bittu assist him in finding and marrying Munni.
Bittu confides in Spielberg, his maternal cousin, and Rukku tells them about Munni’s past, revealing that she is Bela’s grandmother. When Munjya sees Bela, he becomes attracted to her and makes preparations to wed and sacrifice her. Bittu and Spielberg turn to Elvis, an exorcist, for assistance, and he comes up with a scheme to murder Munjya by transferring him into a goat through the parakāyapraveśa ceremony (using a spirit exchanging sign). But the scheme fails, and Bela becomes possessed.
Now in Bela’s body, Munjya attempts to murder Bittu, but Elvis steps in and stops him in a salt circle. They search for the goat after learning that it contains Bela’s spirit, but Bittu’s uncle snatches it away. When Bittu and his mother Pammi locate their uncle, they learn that he prepared the goat.
Elvis puts the spirit swap symbol on Balu Kaka’s skull because he believes Bela’s spirit must still be there. Spielberg discovers the goat, who turns out to be alive. Munjya returns Bela’s spirit to her own body by leaping into Balu Kaka’s body. Munjya then tries to sacrifice Bela by taking her away from the haunted tree, but Bittu defeats Munjya by moving him into the tree, which they subsequently burn, under the guidance of Gita’s spirit.
Bittu eventually tells Bela how he feels, and Bela appreciates their connection. Rukku and Spielberg begin collaborating on video shoots. After momentarily harboring the spirit of the peepal tree, Balu Kaka begins acting like a tree. It appears that Munjya may still be alive because the pieces of the burned tree that contained his spirit are taken away.
Munjya watches as Jana gives Bhaskar, also known as Bhediya, clothing, including underwear from the “Munni” brand, while he is stuck in a wilderness while naked in a mid-credits scene.
