Theatre“Chiranjeevulu,” a 2001 Telugu action drama directed by Radha Krishna, follows the story of four close friends: Charan, Kiran, Giri, and Chanti. Charan and Kiran are orphans, while Giri and Chanti, both suffering from terminal illnesses, are being treated at a hospital. Their lives take a dramatic turn when they witness a local MLA and his brother harassing a hospital nurse named Sudha. In an attempt to save her, they accidentally kill the MLA, prompting them to flee as fugitives to an unfamiliar village.
In this new village, they become embroiled in the rivalry between the village president Satyamurthy and the late former president Nagendra. Despite failing to save Nagendra’s son Rajan from Satyamurthy’s henchmen, the village’s widow, Devi, takes them in and claims them as her sons. Devi shares the tale of the rivalry between the two presidents, highlighting Nagendra’s honesty and the jealousy it stirred in Satyamurthy. As the story unfolds, the friends vow to seek justice for Nagendra’s death, and Charan falls in love with a local village girl named Kaveri.
The plot thickens as the friends uncover Satyamurthy’s involvement in illegal activities and schemes to frame them for the theft of the village temple’s jewelry. With determination and the support of Kaveri and an inspector who learns of their plight, they manage to prevent the theft, expose Satyamurthy’s crimes, and ensure Radha and Anand’s marriage. However, their actions incite Satyamurthy’s rage, leading to a final showdown, during which Charan avenges Nagendra’s death. Despite losses along the way, the film concludes with Charan and Kiran surrendering to the inspector, heading to the city, and a voiceover proclaiming them as “chiranjeevulu,” or “immortals,” for their heroic deeds.
