TheatreAshwiny Iyer Tiwari is the director of the 2017 Indian Hindi-language romantic comedy-drama Bareilly Ki Barfi, often known as Bareilly’s Barfi. The Ingredients of Love by Nicolas Barreau served as its inspiration. Pankaj Tripathi and Seema Pahwa play supporting parts in the movie, which stars Ayushmann Khurrana, Kriti Sanon, and Rajkummar Rao in the key roles. When it debuted in theaters in India on August 18, 2017, the weekend of Independence Day, it was widely praised by critics, with Rao’s performance receiving particular attention. Despite a budget of ₹20 crore (US$2.4 million), it became a commercial triumph at the box office, earning over ₹60 crore (US$7.1 million) worldwide and playing for over 70 days in India and beyond.
After yet another failed attempt at an arranged marriage, Bitti Mishra, a tomboy in Bareilly, flees her home. She purchases and reads the novel Bareilly Ki Barfi while she waits for a train, and to her surprise, she discovers that she is the main character, Barfi. Happy and hopeful that there is someone who may love her for who she is, she goes back home and makes the decision to find the author, identified on the back cover as “Pritam Vidrohi.” She is sent to Chirag Dubey, a young guy who runs the printing press where the book was published, by the proprietor of the bookstore. By delivering Bitti’s letters to Vidrohi and returning with his responses, he consents to act as her courier.
Because Chirag wrote the book five years ago after his ex-girlfriend, Babli (the Barfi in the book), married someone else, Bitti is ignorant that Chirag is the book’s original author. In order to publish his novel, Chirag used his friend’s name, “Vidrohi,” as a pseudonym. Chirag plans to discover whether Bitti is similar to his ex-girlfriend, which could lead to a second shot at love, since Bitti believes she is Barfi.
Although Bitti and Chirag become good friends, Chirag still longs to meet Vidrohi, the author who has been responding to her correspondence. He makes arrangements for Bitti to meet the real Vidrohi since he is unwilling to give up the deception just yet. His buddy Pritam Vidrohi, who had left town shortly after the novel’s publication, is brought back to Lucknow by him. Since Bitti had a different impression of Vidrohi after reading his letters, she is initially taken aback by his thugs’ actions (which are a ploy, part of Chirag’s scheme). However, she quickly seems to like him and thinks that, like herself, society misunderstands him.
In order to prevent Bitti’s parents from considering Pritam as a suitable suitor for her, Chirag, who had intended for him to leave the scene after pushing Bitti away, is now compelled to disparage him. He fabricates a story about Pritam’s failed marriage. Bitti is completely unfazed by this, but it ultimately ruins the deal for Rama, Bitti’s friend who had come to appreciate Pritam.
Having formerly liked Rama, Pritam now rebels against the cunning Chirag and won’t stop the whole sham. Chirag accepts that he would lose his love once more when Bitti and Pritam soon declare their engagement. He uses his Vidrohi identity to write Bitti a final, emotional letter on the eve of the event. He gives Pritam the letter to read at the ceremony, but when Pritam complains of a sore throat, he has to read it to Bitti himself.
At this point, Bitti reveals that she had long suspected Chirag was the true author and that Pritam had consented to help Bitti discover whether Chirag truly loved her or if she was just attracted to her because she looked like his ex-girlfriend. Ultimately, Pritam and Chirag both wed their selected spouses, Rama and Bitti, respectively, and live contented married lives in Bareilly.
