Story:

The biography of musician Amar Singh Chamkila is the basis for the 2024 Indian Hindi-language biographical drama film Amar Singh Chamkila. Imtiaz Ali is the co-writer, producer, and director. Diljit Dosanjh plays the title role in the movie, and Parineeti Chopra plays Amarjot, his second wife.

A. R. Rahman wrote the music for the movie, and Irshad Kamil wrote the lyrics. The main period of photography lasted from December 2022 to March 2023. With a critical acclaim and a Netflix release on April 12, 2024, the picture debuted in Mumbai on April 8, 2024, and was hailed by many as a comeback for Imtiaz Ali’s career.

Plot

As he struggles with rising recognition and harsh criticism prior to his tragic demise, a modest singer’s bold lyrics spark fame and rage throughout Punjab.

Born from a Ravidassia Dalit Sikh family in Punjab, Amar Singh spent his teenage years working in a factory that made socks, much to his dismay, while his heart and soul were torn when he was making music. With the assistance of his friends, he eventually made the decision to break free and began establishing relationships with musicians in the state. He began working with Jatinder Jinda (Surinder Shinda), a well-known singer and musician who recognized his potential and started using his words in his songs (without giving Amar Singh any credit).

Fortunately, he was given the opportunity to sing in Jinda’s place because he was running late, and the audience was so enthralled with Amar Singh’s performance—the name “Chamkila” was initially linked to him at this event—that they no longer wanted to hear the lead singer Jinda because of the intensity of his voice and lyrics. The remainder of the film chronicles his post-event life, including his unsolved assassination.
