The first TV shows Imtiaz Ali directed were Kurukshetra for Zed TV and Imtihaan for Doordarshan. He then began watching Bollywood flicks. He made his directing debut in 2005 with the Abhay Deol and Ayesha Takia-starring film Socha Na Tha. Later, at a speech, he cited that it took him three years to complete the film. His second movie, Jab We Met, which starred Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor at the time they were a real-life couple, was a financial success. Saif Ali Khan and Deepika Padukone starred in his subsequent film, Love Aaj Kal, which became his biggest commercial hit to date. Despite receiving mixed reviews, Ranbir Kapoor’s performance in Rockstar, directed by Ali, and the music of A.R. Rahman, did well at the box office. Highway was the first movie produced by Ali’s Window Seat Films, which he created.
The movie, which starred Randeep Hooda and Alia Bhatt, was favourably received by reviewers and is regarded as one of his best works. Tamasha, his next project, had Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone in the key roles. It was released on November 27, 2015, to mixed reviews, but it has since gained cult status for its subject matter influencing many young people later on and is considered one of Ali’s best films. The movie premiered to positive reviews from cities and had a modest amount of success. In August 2017, the film Jab Harry Met Sejal, directed by him and starring Shah Rukh Khan and Anushka Sharma, was released. Despite receiving positive reviews abroad, the movie received poor reviews in India. After waiting three years, his next film, Love Aaj Kal, starring Kartik Aaryan and Sara Ali Khan, was released on February 14, 2020, to unfavourable reviews.
