Theatre“Abhimanyu” is a 2003 Indian Telugu film directed by A. Mallikarjun and produced by Ashwini Dutt. The movie features Kalyan Ram, Ramya (making her Telugu debut), Suhasini Mani Ratnam, and Pawan Malhotra in prominent roles, with music composed by Mani Sharma. This Telugu film is a remake of the Kannada movie “Abhi” (2003), which also starred Ramya.
The narrative revolves around Abhimanyu, commonly known as Abhi (Kalyan Ram), a culturally adept young man. Saira Bhanu (Ramya) and her family seek a rental house from Abhi’s family, leading to initial animosity between the two families. The tension gradually dissipates as Abhi and Bhanu get to know each other. However, religious differences emerge, as Bhanu is Muslim, and Abhi is Hindu.
Bhanu’s father strongly opposes their relationship and sets out to confront Bhanu’s lover. Abhi disagrees with this aggressive approach and tensions escalate in college, leading to confrontations. Eventually, Bhanu’s family decides to leave for Kurnool. In Kurnool, Abhi, along with his friends, embarks on a quest to find Bhanu. Despite the family’s unawareness of their past relationship, Abhi manages to communicate with Bhanu.
A poignant moment unfolds when Abhi and Bhanu openly reveal their love in front of their families. The elderly lady in Bhanu’s house advises Abhi to leave immediately, as the men from the mosque might pose a threat. Confused, Abhi questions his mother (Suhasini Mani Ratnam) about the old lady’s warning. His mother unravels a heartbreaking flashback, disclosing that Abhi is adopted, and his real parents faced tragic consequences for their interreligious marriage.
Bhanu learns a parallel version of the story from her grandmother, discovering the grim fate that befell her grandfather and father. Disturbed by this revelation, Bhanu decides to sacrifice her love for the sake of family honor and departs for Hyderabad to inform Abhi. The revelation brings Abhi and Bhanu to a shared decision to part ways. However, misunderstandings arise, and Bhanu’s father, suspecting that she eloped with Abhi, attempts to harm him.
A fierce confrontation ensues between Abhi and Bhanu’s father. The elderly lady intervenes, urging Bhanu’s father to cease his ruthless actions. In a moment of realization, he acknowledges his mistake and allows Bhanu to marry Abhi, marking a poignant resolution to their tumultuous journey.
