“Majili,” meaning “A part of a journey,” is a 2019 Indian Telugu-language romantic sports drama film directed by Shiva Nirvana and produced by Sahu Garapati and Harish Peddi under the banner of Shine Screens Production. The film boasts a stellar cast, including Naga Chaitanya, Samantha Ruth Prabhu, and Divyansha Kaushik, with supporting roles played by Subbaraju, Rao Ramesh, and Atul Kulkarni.
This marked the fourth collaboration between Naga Chaitanya and Samantha, following their work in “Ye Maaya Chesave,” “Manam,” and “Autonagar Surya.” Released on 5 April 2019, the film garnered positive reviews from both audiences and critics, leading to its remake in Marathi as “Ved” in 2022. The narrative revolves around Poorna, an aspiring cricketer living in Vizag with his father Rama Chandara.
His dream is to play for the Indian Cricket Team, starting with getting selected for the local railway team. While pursuing his cricket ambitions, he encounters Anshu, and despite initial misunderstandings, they develop a deep bond and fall in love. Unfortunately, circumstances and Anshu’s parents separate them, and Anshu, who promises to return, never does.
Poorna, devastated, spirals into depression, turning to alcohol and forsaking his cricket career. Unbeknownst to Poorna, his neighbor Sravani has been in love with him. Despite distancing herself upon learning of Poorna’s feelings for Anshu, she eventually marries him to alleviate his and his father’s pain. However, Poorna remains emotionally distant, relying on Sravani’s income while drowning in memories of Anshu and succumbing to alcohol.
The plot takes a turn when Poorna encounters Meera, Anshu’s daughter, during a cricket player selection in Dehradun. Learning of Anshu’s demise, Poorna agrees to bring Meera to Vizag for cricket training at Rajeev’s request, Anshu’s father. As Meera discovers the truth about her mother and Poorna, she expresses her desire to play for the local Railway team.
To facilitate this, Poorna and Sravani decide to adopt Meera. However, Meera sets a condition: they must act like a married couple, not strangers. This agreement prompts Poorna to reevaluate his past, realizing Sravani’s love for him. The couple decides to embrace a new beginning, but miscommunication leads Sravani to contemplate leaving for Bhubaneswar.
Poorna, realizing the impending separation, confesses his love, prompting Sravani to stay, culminating in a heartwarming embrace, completing Poorna’s journey (Majili) toward love. The film’s production included shooting in Vizag, particularly at the Simhachalam railway station. Samantha’s role as a booking clerk added authenticity to the scenes. The shooting concluded on 21 February 2019, with dubbing and post-production wrapping up by 16 March 2019.
The music, composed by Gopi Sundar with background score by S. Thaman, was released under the Aditya Music label. The soundtrack includes tracks like “One Boy One Girl,” “Priyathama Priyathama,” “Naa Gundello,” “Yedetthu Mallele,” and “Ye Manishike Majiliyo.” “Priyathama Priyathama” received particular acclaim from The Times of India. “Majili” stands as a poignant tale of love, loss, and redemption, weaving together elements of romance, sports, and drama to create a compelling cinematic experience.
