Story:

“Jagadam,” translated as “Quarrel,” stands as a 2007 Indian Telugu-language action film crafted by the talented Sukumar, who served as both the writer and director. The movie features a cast including Ram, Isha Sahani, Pradeep Rawat, and Prakash Raj, with Aditya Babu taking charge as the producer. Released on March 16, 2007, “Jagadam” encountered a diverse reception, drawing mixed reviews from both critics and audiences alike.

The commendable aspects of the film, such as Ram’s performance, Sukumar’s direction, the music, cinematography, editing, and action sequences, garnered acclaim. However, the storyline and screenplay faced criticism for their perceived routine nature, leading to the film’s box office failure. Despite this initial setback, “Jagadam” managed to amass a substantial cult following over the years, especially credited to Ram’s noteworthy performance, the captivating music, and Sukumar’s directorial prowess.

It has now solidified its position as one of the standout films in Sukumar’s portfolio. The narrative unfolds with Seenu, who, since childhood, has harbored a fascination for fights and violence. Idolizing Manikyam, a feared goonda, Seenu aspires to follow in his footsteps, recognizing the influence and respect such a lifestyle commands. Despite his rough exterior, Seenu learns the importance of political backing and alliances in this world.

Assisted by Laddu, a member of Manikyam’s gang, Seenu establishes contact with the notorious figure and becomes part of his criminal enterprise. Amidst these dynamics, Seenu’s life takes an unexpected turn as he falls in love with Subbalakshmi, compelling him to navigate a complex scenario involving a land deal mired in the illegal occupation of Manikyam’s gang member.

Keeping his promise to settle the land deal, Seenu defies Manikyam, transforming himself into an unintended hero who begins handling settlements independently. His ventures take a darker turn when he agrees to assist an industrialist, with the support of Manikyam, in a conflict involving Yadav’s occupation of a quarry. As the situation spirals out of control, Seenu contemplates violence but is unable to act.

Tragedy unfolds when Seenu’s younger brother, influenced by a love for fighting scenes, takes matters into his own hands and shoots Yadav. Seenu, seeking justice, appeals to the police commissioner but tragically loses his brother at the hands of Manikyam’s men. This incident sparks a transformation in Seenu, leading him to confront and thrash Manikyam but ultimately sparing his life.

Realizing the futility of violence, Seenu chooses to abandon the path of crime, culminating in a poignant and optimistic conclusion. Despite the film’s mixed reception, Sify awarded “Jagadam” three stars out of five, describing it as “not a plot-driven film.” While acknowledging the film’s strengths in cinematography and music, the reviewer critiqued its weak script and lackluster characters. Rediff.com, on the other hand, praised Sukumar’s screenplay and direction. Idlebrain.com appreciated Sukumar’s venture into a different theme but criticized the film for its slow-paced second half and a weak climax, offering a diverse range of perspectives on the cinematic creation.
