Story:

Shakun Batra is the director of Gehraiyaan a romantic drama film in Hindi that was produced by Dharma Productions, Viacom18 Studios, and Jouska Films in 2022.  Ananya Panday, Dhairya Karwa, Rajat Kapoor, and Naseeruddin Shah play supporting parts in the movie, which stars Deepika Padukone and Siddhant Chaturvedi in the key roles. Gehraiyaan had its Amazon Prime Video debut on February 11, 2022. Critics gave the movie mixed reviews, praising its soundtrack, cinematography, visual aesthetic, and cast performances while criticizing its plot, screenplay, and climax.

Thirty-year-old yoga teacher Alisha “Al” Khanna is working on an app but is having trouble finding investors while supporting her unemployed writer partner Karan Arora. She also experiences anxiety, is alienated from her father Vinod, whom she holds responsible for her mother’s melancholy, and deals with the suicide of her mother Sonali when she was a toddler. Alisha’s cousin Tia “Ti” extends an invitation to the couple’s beach villa in Alibaug, where she is engaged to Zain Oberoi.

Because of their terrible background, Zain and Alisha connect and engage in flirtation. Alisha later gives him an impetuous kiss but quickly regrets it. Through their families, Alisha, Tia, and Karan have been friends since childhood. She is very saddened when she learns that Karan has given Tia access to his manuscript but not to her, despite her repeated requests to view it. She then allows Zain into her life, and they start an affair.

Zain convinces his company to fund Alisha’s software. He tells her that his father’s abuse of him and his mother prompted him to immigrate to the United States. Later, in front of Tia and Zain as well as the rest of his family and friends, Karan pops the question to Alisha, who accepts. She breaks up with Karan shortly after ending her affair with Zain in order to concentrate on starting over with Karan. After she learns that Karan’s book was rejected before he proposed—a fact he decided to conceal from her—they split up.

She and Zain keep having an affair, and Zain promises to break up with Tia after he reimburses her father for his investment in his business. Alisha receives a new yoga studio and another investment from Zain’s company in her app. When Zain arrives at Alisha’s flat, they start kissing. Sex is hinted when Zain finally takes Alisha’s clothes off.

Alisha tells Zain she is pregnant during the anniversary celebration for Zain and Tia. When one of Zain’s investors is accused of money laundering, his business is under scrutiny. Tia confronts Zain after discovering Alisha’s anxiety medication under his jacket. By claiming that he is under stress from his job, he placates her. During a business conference, Alisha confronts Zain in front of his colleagues after the investigating officials from his company close off Alisha’s yoga studio. Jitesh, Zain’s business associate, discovers the truth about Zain’s liaison with Alisha.

In an attempt to salvage the business, Tia consents to mortgage the beach house in Alibaug; nevertheless, Zain sells it, believing he can repurchase it in a year. Tia demands to see his phone in Alibaug and accuses him of having an affair. She feels bad and signs the documents as he shows her his phone. Karan informs Alisha that both of them are in Alibaug and that Tia is assisting Zain with his business. An irate Alisha threatens to expose the facts to Tia unless Zain does so.

Jitesh quietly tells Zain that he can eliminate the proof that Alisha is pregnant by using medicines. Falsely claiming to have broken up with Tia, Zain invites Alisha to his yacht. However, Alisha witnesses him surreptitiously adding tablets to her drink. She tells Zain that she wants to return to land because she is horrified. When she declines, Zain tries to throw her overboard, but he slips and smacks his head on the yacht’s railing, drowning in the sea. Zain notices Tia’s incoming call on Alisha’s phone and urges her to decline. Alisha is terrified and runs home, where she suffers a PTSD-related miscarriage.

The cops discover Zain’s body when Tia phones them. Jitesh, who was aware of Zain’s scheme, threatens to reveal their affair to everyone unless Alisha gets the signed documents from the beach property sale from the safe in Tia’s home. Jitesh assists Alisha in disguising Zain’s death as a suicide. Tia tells Alisha that Alisha was born as a result of her father Kumud’s romance with Alisha’s mother Sonali. Additionally, Tia tells her that Kumud left the beach house in his will under Alisha’s name.

Alisha, who is depressed, tries to end her life, but Vinod stops her. Alisha recognizes that she has become just like her mother by refusing to feel stifled like her. Vinod reassures her that he did not want Sonali’s life to be defined by that one mistake when she queries him about why he never told her the truth about Sonali and allows her to blame him even though he was the one who forgiven Sonali.

After two years, when Alisha and Vinod are on better terms, she goes to Karan’s engagement celebration and encounters Tia. Tia questions whether it was appropriate to tell her the truth, but Alisha tells her that it was. Tia consents to patch things up despite their family past, even if she is still ignorant of Zain and Alisha’s affair. When Karan presents them to his fiancée’s grandma, she recognizes Alisha right away and remembers how she and Zain rescued her and her husband from a wrecked boat. Alisha had been introduced by Zain as his fiancée at that point. Realizing that she cannot avoid her past unless she faces it, Alisha looks at the woman blankly.
