Srividya, also known as Sreevidya, was a renowned Indian actress who made her mark primarily in Malayalam and Tamil films, as well as in a few Telugu, Kannada, and Hindi movies. Her career spanned an impressive 40 years during which she appeared in over 800 films, eventually focusing more on Malayalam cinema. Beyond acting, Srividya showcased her talents as a playback and Carnatic singer, as well as a trained Bharathanatyam dancer. She was celebrated for her ability to portray diverse emotions with restraint and subtlety, often using her own voice for dubbing in multiple languages. Sadly, she passed away in 2006 after battling metastatic breast cancer.
Born on July 24, 1953, in Madras, Tamil Nadu, Srividya hailed from a Tamil family. Her parents were the well-known Tamil film comedian Krishnamurthy and Carnatic classical singer M. L. Vasanthakumari. Despite financial hardships, Srividya began her acting career at a young age. Her family’s financial struggles forced her to forego a marriage proposal from a U.S.-based scientist. She debuted as a child artist in the 1967 Tamil film “Thiruvarutchelvar” alongside the legendary Sivaji Ganesan and later ventured into Malayalam and Telugu cinema.
In the mid-1970s, Srividya gained prominence in Tamil films, notably working with director K. Balachander in movies like “Velli Vizha,” “Sollathaan Ninaikkiren,” and “Apoorva Raagangal,” where she was Rajinikanth’s first leading lady. Her career in Malayalam cinema also flourished, with notable roles in films like “Chenda” and “Amba Ambika Ambalika.” Besides acting, Srividya contributed to the film industry as a playback singer and Carnatic vocalist.
In her personal life, Srividya had her share of romantic struggles, including unrequited love with Kamal Haasan and a turbulent marriage with George Thomas, which ended in divorce in 1980. She fought a legal battle to regain her assets after the divorce. Diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer in 2003, she passed away on October 19, 2006, at the age of 53. Before her death, she made provisions in her will to establish a charitable society dedicated to music and dance education for underprivileged students, leaving behind a lasting legacy in the arts.
