Sarathi, also known as Jaya Sarathi Kadali, was born in the quaint town of Penukonda in Andhra Pradesh, India, on June 26, 1942. He rose to prominence as a notable actor in the South Indian film industry, particularly in the realm of comedy, primarily featuring in Telugu language films. Comedy roles are often considered more challenging than conventional ones, but Sarathi managed to establish himself as the preeminent comic actor of his era.
His impeccable timing and innate acting abilities secured him a plethora of roles not only in Telugu cinema but also in Hindi films. Interestingly, Sarathi also dabbled in the camera department for the Bollywood production “Geraftaar” (1985). Sarathi embarked on his cinematic journey with “Sri Seetha Rama Kalyanam” in 1961, a film narrating the renowned Ramayana story of Ravana’s abduction of Sita and his quest for vengeance following the disfigurement of his sister, Surpanakha.
In this film, Sarathi portrayed the character of Nalakuvara. Subsequently, he graced Telugu cinema with his presence in films like “Velugu Needalu,” “Brahmachari,” “Tatamma Kala,” and “Paramanandayya Shishyula Katha.” Sarathi became widely celebrated for his roles in movies such as “Bhakta Kannappa,” where he portrayed Kashinatha Shastri, a Sanskrit scholar, in a narrative centered around Kannappa Nayanar, a devoted follower of Lord Shiva.
This film resonated well with audiences. In “Jaganmohini,” Sarathi assumed the role of a friend to Raja, depicting a storyline rife with betrayal by a royal figure and imbued with elements of the supernatural, garnering a strong response from viewers. His work in “Sommokadidhi Sokokadidhi,” a film directed by Singeetam Srinivas Rao, earned him considerable acclaim.
This movie explored the challenges faced by a doctor due to his uncanny resemblance to another person. Sarathi’s acting contributions in films like “Driver Ramudu,” “Manavoori Pandavulu,” and “Mosagadu” solidified his reputation and presence in the Telugu film industry. “Driver Ramudu,” in particular, enjoyed immense success, with Sarathi in a minor yet impactful role. He also made appearances in films such as “Gopala Rao Gari Ammayi,” “Bobbili Brahmanna,” and “Chattamtho Porattam.” However, following the year 1985, he gradually withdrew from the glamour and spotlight of the film industry.
