His talent also transcended regional boundaries, as he made notable appearances in Hindi, Kannada, Tamil, and Malayalam cinema. As a producer, he played a pivotal role in the creation of about five films under the Hyma Films banner. In the 1960s, he emerged as one of the leading actors in Telugu cinema, alongside stalwarts like N. T. Rama Rao and Akkineni Nageswara Rao. Born into a Telugu Brahmin family to Kesavarao and Seetaramamma in Kodad, which is now part of Telangana, on 16th November 1923, Rao experienced a significant loss when he lost his father the following year.
His early education took place in Gudibanda and Khammam, where he was exposed to puranic stories and Hindu epics through his grandmother.Rao’s interest in drama was piqued when the renowned Surabhi Drama troupe visited his village. Impressed by their professional performances, he established the “Balamitra Natya Mandali” and actively participated in plays like Gayopakhyanam and Madhuseva with his friends.
His portrayal of Brahma in “Sri Krishna Leelalu” with the “Surabhi” group was particularly noteworthy. In 1950, Rao relocated to Madras (now Chennai) and resided with T. Krishnamachari, who worked as an assistant director for H. M. Reddy’s Rohini Pictures.
This move marked the beginning of his film career, with small roles in “Nirdoshi” (1951) and his first leading role in “Pratigna” (1953). Over his illustrious career, he featured in a staggering 450 films, taking on various character roles in addition to around 100 lead roles.
