Biography:

Varalaxmi Sarathkumar, born on March 5, 1985, is a versatile Indian actress prominent in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam films. Her cinematic journey commenced with her debut in the Tamil movie “Podaa Podi” in 2012. Hailing from a family deeply rooted in the entertainment industry, Varalaxmi was born to actor Sarathkumar and Chaya in Bangalore, with actress Raadhika being her stepmother. Her formative years were spent at St. Michael’s Academy in Chennai. She holds a degree in Microbiology from Hindustan Arts and Science College, Chennai, and a Masters in Business Management from the University of Edinburgh. To refine her acting skills, she underwent training at Anupam Kher’s Acting School in Mumbai before embarking on her professional acting career.

While Varalaxmi initially auditioned for several notable films like “Boys” (2003), “Kaadhal” (2004), and “Saroja” (2008), she had to decline some opportunities due to familial influences. Eventually, she secured her breakthrough with Vignesh Shivan’s romantic drama “Podaa Podi” (2012), where she portrayed a London-based dancer. Her performance received critical acclaim, with reviewers praising her spontaneity and charm. Subsequently, she starred in the Kannada film “Maanikya” (2014) alongside Sudeep, contributing to the film’s commercial success. Her commitment to her roles was evident when she lost ten kilograms to embody a karakattam dancer in Bala’s “Tharai Thappattai” (2016).

In 2016, Varalaxmi’s prominence expanded as she worked alongside Mammootty in the Malayalam film “Kasaba.” Her association with Mammootty was partly attributed to her performance in “Tharai Thappattai.” She continued to impress with roles in various films such as “Vikram Vedha,” “Nibunan,” “Vismaya,” “Sathya,” “Kaattu,” and “Masterpiece” in 2017. Varalaxmi’s career also extended to television hosting, where she anchored the show “Unnai Arindhaal” on Jaya TV in 2018. Her portrayal of antagonistic roles in “Sandakozhi 2” and “Sarkar” added depth to her repertoire. She ventured into the Telugu film industry with “Tenali Ramakrishna BA. BL” (2019) and took on an investigative cop role in the thriller “Danny” (2020), earning the title “Makkal Selvi” in the film’s credits and promotions.
